Zamnesia - Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca): Ancient Holistic Medicine

Motherwort (Leonurus cardiaca) is also known as lion’s tail, lion’s ear, or hemp-nettle. And indeed, the plant, which is native to eastern and southeastern Europe, very much resembles the hemp plant due to the shape of its leaves.

Motherwort has been cultivated since ancient times, where it was widely used as a medicinal herb. Famous 17th century herbalist Culpepper wrote, "There is no better herb to take melancholy vapors from the heart... and make a merry, cheerful soul”. The plant was believed to be a powerful antidepressant and was especially popular as a medicine for women. It was prescribed for fainting and hot flashes, and was given to help with childbirth and menstruation problems.

Although the name of the plant suggests that it is particularly beneficial for typical “female problems”, motherwort has a range of versatile benefits. It is believed to help with high blood pressure and irregular heartbeat, and also is invoked for the treatment of flatulence and bloating. Because of its calming effect, motherwort can also help with sleeping troubles.

Motherwort contains a chemical alkaloid called leonurine, which has a mild vasodilating effect. This way, it acts as an antispasmodic that can relax muscles in the body, as well as the heart. People who suffer from anxiety and panic attacks often report that motherwort helps them. Since taking the herb can result in a slower and more regular heartbeat, anxiety is less likely to turn into a panic attack.

Among the compounds found in motherwort are also so-called iridoid glycosides. These plant compounds are believed to decrease cholesterol and triglyceride levels so that motherwort can prevent blood clots, lower blood pressure, and improve circulation.

• Using shredded motherwort leaves to make a tea

To enjoy the numerous healthful benefits of motherwort, you can make a tea from the shredded plant:

Use a strainer/tea infuser and add 1–2 teaspoons of the herb per one cup of motherwort tea. Brew the tea with boiling water and let steep for 10 minutes. Remove strainer and drink the tea up to 3 times per day. Motherwort tea can at times be slightly bitter, but you can sweeten it with honey, sweetener, or sugar to taste. From the motherwort tea you can also make a solution that you can apply topically.

• Growing motherwort plants from seed

With our motherwort seeds, you can grow your own motherwort herbs in your home garden. Since the seeds need to be stratified for several weeks, it is best to sow them in late fall so that winter will naturally stratify them. The seeds will then sprout in spring and the plant will bloom in mid-to-late summer.

Sow the seeds no deeper than 0.5cm deep. You can sow them right in your garden, spaced about 3cm apart. If you use seedling pots of jiffies, you can transplant the sprouted plants into your garden after about 2–3 weeks. Keep the plants about 45–60cm apart, and thin to 30cm apart.

Motherwort grows best in full sun and doesn’t require any special soil. In fact, it does well if you plant it in relatively poor soil. You can harvest the leaves and flower stalks in late June to early August when the plants are in full bloom. This is when the active ingredients in the plant are at their highest levels.

Do not use motherwort when taking anticoagulants (blood thinners). Do not use when taking aspirin, garlic, willow bark, or vitamin E supplements. Do not use if you have blood clotting disorders. Do not take if pregnant or lactating.

This is a nutritional supplement, not intended to treat, cure, or prevent any disease. With further questions about taking motherwort, always consult a medical professional first.
