All Seeds: From Garden Staples to Ethnobotanical Rarities

The grid runs from kitchen garden staples to species most seed shops never touch. If you already know the direction, the type shelves are faster: 74 vegetable varieties, 50 herb seeds, 26 flower seeds and mixes, 13 fruit seeds, 8 microgreens, 7 sprouting seeds, 14 house plant seeds and 15 chilli and pepper varieties. Ethnobotanical seeds and mescaline cacti

Ethnobotany is the polite word for the shelf that made this shop known: plants people have used rather than just looked at. San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi) and Peruvian Torch germinate best in high humidity, in peat-based cactus soil, and then need airflow straight away or damping off takes the seedlings. Peyote (Lophophora williamsii) is the slow one. Echinopsis macrogona, sold here as Trichocereus macrogonus, joins the same shelf, and the Prickly Pack bundles Peyote, San Pedro, Peruvian Torch, Bolivian Torch and macrogona at 20 seeds each with cactus nutrients thrown in. All of them carry mescaline as their headline alkaloid.

Away from the cacti, Mucuna pruriens is the one to handle with gloves. The species name is Latin for itching, and the pods really are covered in fine irritating hairs. Ephedra viridis, the Green Mormon Tea, and Ma Huang (Ephedra sinica) from the arid slopes of northern China are the two Ephedras we stock, and Hawaiian Baby Woodrose and Morning Glory both carry LSA in their seed.

Poppy and herb seeds, plus the kitchen garden half

Papaver somniferum is the opium poppy, though the seeds themselves hold no alkaloids, which is why the same species turns up on bread rolls. Eschscholzia californica, the California poppy, is the ornamental cousin: 13 to 152 cm depending on conditions, orange to red flowers that shut at night and on grey days. The herb end is deeper than most people expect, with sage, lovage, hyssop, salad burnet and cardoon alongside the obvious basil and thyme. How to choose the right seeds for your patience level

Germination temperature and seed viability matter, but the honest first filter is time. Alfalfa sprouts need a jar, an 8 to 10 hour soak and about five days. Mizuna microgreens are cut in weeks and taste of mustard. A coffee plant takes roughly 50 days just to germinate. A kiwi vine wants two weeks in a sealed bag on damp paper, then three to four months in pots, and still will not fruit for four to six years. The cacti are on that same slow clock.

Two things worth knowing before you order. Atlantic Giant Pumpkin can pass 100 kg, which is a scales project rather than a dinner: for something you actually cook, Uchiki Kuri is the better packet. And Philodendron selloum is poisonous, so keep the seedlings away from pets. Store what you do not sow somewhere cool and dry, and most of these packets will still come up next spring.
