Magic Truffles - Information

Although psilocybin is most commonly associated with mushroom fruiting bodies (the classic image of a mushroom), the psychedelic molecule also occurs in other parts of the organism. “Magic” truffles are the succulent nodules that grow underneath the ground. Despite their different growth pattern, they also contain high levels of psilocybin—enough to induce an insightful and comprehensive trip.

Below, we’ll explore the world of magic truffles, precisely what they are, different varieties, and how to consume them.

WHAT ARE MAGIC TRUFFLES?

WHAT ARE MAGIC TRUFFLES?

Magic truffles, also known as sclerotia, are nodules that contain the psychedelic compound psilocybin. In that respect, they are similar to mushroom fruiting bodies that appear above ground. However, truffles are underground masses that exist primarily as a food reserve to be used in case of harsh conditions. Magic truffles are deemed equally as potent as their fruiting body counterparts. However, this generalisation isn’t strictly true. Just like shrooms, there are different species of magic truffles. Each contains varying levels of psilocybin, and some have the potential to launch users into a fully-fledged spiritual experience. This isn’t surprising, considering they contain such a powerful hallucinogen.

What are magic truffles?

Magic truffles are a type of psychedelic. They contain psilocybin and psilocin, two chemical compounds that cause consumers to trip. To learn all there is to know about magic truffles, click here.

Psilocin can pass through the blood-brain barrier and acts as an agonist of several serotonin receptors. It’s able to achieve this mechanism of action due to its structural similarity to the neurotransmitter serotonin. Researchers have detected psilocin in human blood around half an hour after psilocybin ingestion. Levels peak around 90 minutes after ingestion.

Science has yet to elucidate the exact mechanisms by which psilocin induces its psychoactive effects. It’s known to disrupt serotonin pathways, change the signalling of the amino acid glutamine, and to alter sensory input in the cortex. Research conducted at Imperial College London used functional magnetic resonance imaging to confirm that psilocin decreased activity and connectivity in the brain’s key connector hubs. This may be the mechanism the molecule triggers to enable a state of unconstrained cognition.

Common experiences when taking magic truffles include synaesthesia—the blending of hearing, colour, and taste—out-of-body experiences, seeing geometric patterns, introspective analysis, and ego death.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MAGIC TRUFFLES

DIFFERENT TYPES OF MAGIC TRUFFLES

The strength of a truffle experience depends on both the species consumed and the dose. Different types of truffles contain varying levels of psilocybin. It’s important to know which will offer a mellow experience, and which will catapult you into a psychedelic voyage. Let’s explore a few truffle species and their unique effects:

Hollandia is one of the most potent truffle varieties available. Its name stems from its location of origin—Holland; a nation that has a longstanding relationship with magic mushrooms and truffles.

Tampanensis catalyses a deeply introverted experience. The truffles ignite contemplative thoughts and a meditative state. For this reason, they have become known as "philosopher’s stones". The variety was discovered in nature in 1977 by Dr. Steven Pollock. He located the species in Tampa, Florida—hence the name. One year later, the famed mycologist Paul Stamets discovered a cultivation technique for the species. Since then, growers in the Netherlands have been producing the variety in large quantities.

Pajaritos is a truffle native to regions of South America. The Aztecs and Mayans are believed to have used the variety during spiritual rituals. The species is a rather tame variety, and for that reason is beginner-friendly. It produces a happy and social state of mind. It’s an ideal species to consume in nature with a close group of friends. Enjoy the enhanced surroundings during a hike, or sit around the campfire and gaze into the flames.

Mexicana is perhaps the most well-known magic truffle species. The variety is native to South America where it’s long been used ceremonially. It’s perhaps the mildest truffle species, and produces a warm, fuzzy, and fun experience. However, caution should still be employed. Don’t underestimate this species.

Remember, the effects of psilocybin truffles vary among every individual. It’s recommended to pay special attention to set and setting to produce the most favourable outcome possible.

Anybody with pre-existing (or a family history of) mental health conditions is advised to avoid consuming magic truffles. It’s also recommended to have a trusted trip sitter present throughout the experience.

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAGIC TRUFFLES AND MAGIC MUSHROOMS

THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN MAGIC TRUFFLES AND MAGIC MUSHROOMS

A truffle is not that different from a fruiting body. When you look at what's colloquially called a mushroom, what you inevitably envision is the fruiting body, an above-ground outgrowth formed of an extensive network of organic filaments that reside underground. These filaments—known individually as hyphae and collectively as mycelium—are the main body of the organism.

The fruiting body is to the mycelium what the apple is to the apple tree. It’s a fruit that plays a critical role in reproduction. Instead of bearing a seed, mushrooms produce and release spores. When conditions are right, the subterranean mycelium generates a three-dimensional matrix above ground to spread its genetic code.

A truffle is similar to a mushroom in that it’s a mass of mycelium, otherwise known as a sclerotium (plural sclerotia). Its irregular shape resembles a nugget or stone in appearance.

HOW TO CONSUME MAGIC TRUFFLES

HOW TO CONSUME MAGIC TRUFFLES

Magic truffles are best consumed on an empty stomach to absorb the psilocybin and avoid excessive vomiting if nausea strikes. Users can choose to eat them raw or use them as a topping on pizza, etc.

Another method of consumption is to brew truffle tea. Truffle tea takes less time to kick in—approximately fifteen minutes—and lasts around four hours. It saves the digestive system from having to break down the truffle tissue, and instead introduces psilocybin directly to the gut lining.

5 Simple Methods To Easily Consume Magic Mushrooms And Truffles

Beginners should start out with no more than 3.5g of truffles per cup of tea, up to 15g for veterans. The latter is considered a "heroic dose". Any dose beyond that should be considered "daredevil". However, consider the strength of the truffles you’re using. Start low and slow to avoid a bad trip.

USE LEMON TEK TO SHORTEN ONSET

USE LEMON TEK TO SHORTEN ONSET

In an everlasting quest to chase strong altered states of consciousness, psychonauts have discovered a means of enhancing the truffle experience. Allow us to introduce lemon tek.

Remember when we discussed the dephosphorylation of psilocybin into psilocin? Well, lemon tek catalyses this reaction before the molecule enters the body. The technique uses the acidity of lemon juice to convert psilocybin into psilocin on command. This results in a faster onset, and potentially a more powerful, albeit shorter, experience.

CAN YOU CONSUME MAGIC TRUFFLES DAILY?

Can You consume Magic Truffles Daily?

Consuming truffles daily isn’t advised. For one, many users explain that there’s no need. The spiritual and therapeutic effects exert a long-lasting afterglow, removing the need to dose frequently. Furthermore, there is a refractory period of a few days after taking truffles. The same dose will have little-to-no effect when taken in such close proximity. This is thought to be caused by downregulation of serotonin receptors following a psilocybin experience.

However, truffles can be consumed more regularly as part of a microdosing regimen. Microdosing is the act of taking sub-perceptual doses of a psychedelic. This means taking such a small amount that you experience benefits like improved cognition and creativity, without any psychedelic side effects. A standard starting dose would be around 0.1g of powder in a capsule.

Psychedelic researcher and author Dr. James Fadiman recommends consuming a microdose once every three days. This allows serotonin receptors to return to baseline. When microdosing, Dr. Fadiman recommends following your regular daily routine, observing residual effects on days off.
