Ayurveda is a holistic Indian system of wellbeing going back more than 3,000 years. The name means "knowledge of life" (ayur = life, veda = knowledge), and it leans on herbs, spices and daily routines to keep body and mind in balance. Treat it as support for your wellbeing, not a replacement for medical care, and keep in mind the evidence varies from one herb to the next.
The flagship. An adaptogen traditionally used to take the edge off stress, and the one we'd start with if you're new to all this. It has an earthy, slightly horsey smell, which is actually where the name comes from.
Best known for its active compound curcumin, traditionally used around everyday inflammation and joints. Fair warning: it stains everything it touches a stubborn yellow, hands and worktops included.
A natural source of L-dopa, usually reached for around mood and motivation. It sits in a different lane from ashwagandha, more lift than calm, so pick based on what you're after.
Triphala, a blend of three fruits, is the classic digestion tonic, and properly bitter. You'll also find brahmi (linked with focus, a fit alongside our brain range), tulsi and shatavari among our herbs.
Ayurveda sorts people into three energy types. Vata (air) is quick and creative but runs cold and restless. Pitta (fire) is driven and sharp but overheats. Kapha (earth) is calm and steady but slow to get going. Most people are a mix with one dominant dosha, and a dosha quiz or an ayurvedic consult points you toward the herbs and routines that suit you. Want to unwind first? Browse Relax.
Do ayurvedic supplements work? Evidence varies by herb. Some, like ashwagandha and turmeric, have been studied for stress and inflammation; others rest mainly on traditional use. They work best as part of a steady routine, not on their own.
Which dosha am I? Most people are a blend with one dominant type; a dosha quiz gives a rough read before you commit to anything.
Are they safe? For most people, yes, at sensible doses. Check the label, and if you're pregnant, breastfeeding or on medication, talk to a healthcare professional first.
Where do I start? Ashwagandha is the easiest first step. After that, pick by your dosha and goal: mucuna for mood, brahmi for focus.
