Information About Kratom

What is Kratom?

What is Kratom?

Kratom is a tree that grows in Southeast Asia, the leaves of which contain alkaloids that give users an opiate-like buzz. Though not itself an opiate, it is for these opiate-like effects that it has become increasingly popular.

A relative newcomer to the range of consciousness-altering herbal tools in the Western toolbox, kratom is a subtle and intriguing plant with medical and therapeutic potential beyond its trippy headline use.

Mitragyna speciosa Korthals, a plant of the family Rubiaceae, is native to the tropical regions in Indochina, the central and southern regions of Thailand (rarely in the north), the northern Malay Peninsula to Borneo and is commonly called Kratom, but also goes under the names Kratum and Krathom. The tree was first formally described in the 17th century by the Dutch botanist Pieter Korthals, who named it Mitragyna, because the first specimen he examined had stigmas in the shape of a bishop's mitre, hence the botanical name.

The erect stem of the arborescent plant reaches a height of up to 50 feet (15 meters) and develops branches of over 7 feet (2 meters) in length. The leaves of the tree have a dark glossy green look and are shed and replaced throughout the whole year, but in the rainy season the new growth is more abundant, whereas the shedding is more plentiful in the dry season. This means it is rather evergreen than deciduous, except when grown outside its natural habitat; if the temperature falls to around 4°C, it will act just like any other regular tree that prepares for hibernation.

Thailand, Where It Has Been Used For Centuries To Alleviate Chronic Pain

In Thailand, where it has been used for centuries to alleviate chronic pain, to uplift mood and to treat health problems, Kratom is banned since 1943, but not because they had a problem with health problems that occurred due to the use of it (like some uninformed sources claim). Actually, they had a totally different problem with it - it was a FINANCIAL reason: It reduced the tax revenue from opium distribution for the Thai government!

Kratom itself is not an opiate, but it is becoming increasingly popular because of its opiate-like effects. But it is capable to achieve more than just a weary head - returning customers use it to treat pain, to get a boost of energy, to alleviate anxiety and symptoms of depression and to achieve a feeling of wellness and happiness. The main active compound of Kratom is 7-Hydroxymitragynine. While it does not seem to have significant adverse effects, its safety and efficacy are not well researched yet and permanent use of Kratom has been reported to cause constipation, weight loss due to a loss of appetite and darkening of the skin color of the face. Withdrawal symptoms after continuous use include diarrhea, a runny nose and short temper.

Effects of Kratom

Effects of Kratom

Kratom is a versatile drug with a plethora of benefits. There is much more to it that just the stimulating effect of small doses and the weary head sleepiness after ingesting a large amount. Traditionally, Thai laborers and farmers mostly used Kratom on a daily basis (3 to up to 10 times per day) as a stimulant to overcome the burdens of their hard work and scanty existences, as an analgesic, as a substitute in opiate or heroin withdrawal, as a anti-diarrheal and even as an aphrodisiac to intensify or prolong sexual intercourse. The effects of Kratom will come on within five to ten minutes after ingestion and can last for several hours.

Kratom and more specifically mitragynine is known to stimulate the body and increases the activity of the user, giving him an energy-boost energetic enough to feel a strong desire to do work, while still functioning completely normal with a calm mind. Depending on the users body chemistry, metabolism, weight, tolerance and many other natural factors, the effects can last for up to several hours.

Traditional use of Kratom includes treatment of (chronic) pain and nowadays it is becoming more widely known among patients who beforehand relied on prescription pain medications such as Oxycodone or Hydrocodone, but could no longer deal with the severe side-effects or had build up a tolerance. Besides, Kratom is a very cheap alternative to the high-priced prescription drugs and appears to have way less side-effects and a low addiction potential. In most cases, Kratom does not cause nausea or vomiting (Other than many prescription opiates).

Several sources mention the positive effects of Kratom as a means to enhance the mood and to lower anxiety, but long-term studies are still pending. Don't medicate yourself if you suffer from chronic depression or anxiety; those are serious illnesses and you should definitely consult your doctor prior to the use of Kratom to alleviate your symptoms.

In traditional medicine and lately in modern curative medicine, Kratom is used as a substitute to wean patients off of their addiction to prescription opiates, opium, Heroin and most recently it has been used in New Zealand in a methadone addiction detoxification program. Kratom has proven to aid in withdrawals.

Recreational users mostly enjoy the narcotic-like effects of Kratom and its popularity has increased significantly over the past recent years, very likely also due to its legal status (Kratom is illicit in only 9 countries of the world) and availability. Depending on individual preferences the users take a relatively low dose if they seek a stimulating effect for the body and happy, euphoric state of mind, while some enjoy the relaxing and analgesic effects of higher doses and yet others utilize small to moderate doses to get a boost of energy to get their homework done. And those who want to call it a day early, take a heavy dose to prolong their sleep.

Kratom has an amazing effect for people suffering from diarrhea and is an effective natural substitute that rivals over the counter or prescription medication.

Kratom Cranks Up The Body Activity

Since Kratom cranks up the body activity, it is only natural that some users feel an increased sex drive after ingestion of Kratom. It is said to increase the female libido and allegedly helps with erectile dysfunction.

Rumors are, that Kratom could be used to treat symptoms of Adult Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), but scientific proof is still pending.

It’s only since the early 2000s that kratom has made its way with any regularity into the US and European markets, mainly via online and offline headshops supplied from Thailand and Bali. It is sold dried as a loose-leaf tea, as a powder (loose and in capsules), which is raw or fortified with leaf extract.

It is generally taken orally, the leaves chewed and held as a quid in the mouth for at least 10 minutes, or the dry powder simmered for 30-40 minutes to make a tea.

It’s kratom’s opioid receptor agonists that give the plant the psychoactive effects that have put it on the radar of fans of plant-based altered states the world over in recent years.

Like most herbal highs, the experience kratom can vary from individual to individual and from occasion to occasion, making a shopping list of expected effects difficult. There are also differences in batches of the herb and potency of different brands. Plus its effects differ depending on whether the dose taken was low or high.

A Sense Of Inner Warmth And Happiness

Our advice is to read what it says on your particular pack, start at the low end of the dosage spectrum and work up depending on your own experience. That said, the effects are felt both mentally and bodily, and include:

A sense of inner warmth and happiness, pleasant thoughts, a slowing of breathing and the mind’s chatter, slight disconnection from the body (though nothing bordering on an out of body experience), very relaxed whether in social interactions or by oneself. Some advocates report an increased ability to focus, and calm but intense mental stimulation. At higher doses it becomes progressively more soporific, with closed eye visuals.

Though it slows breathing down, unlike morphine kratom does not actually suppress it and so does not pose the risk of overdose and death. At worst, some users experience mild nausea. Some report a groggy hangover, others don’t. Some people love it and others find it pretty ‘meh’.

How to consume Kratom?

Video: How to consume Kratom?

There are various ways of ingesting Kratom, but in the Western world fresh leaves of the Mitragyna speciosa Korthals plant are rarely available, so we will limit our little "menu card" to dried, crushed and powdered leaves.

If you ordered dried or crushed leaves, you are well advised to make a powder out of them. Not only does it remove the stems and veins, but it also allows for easier dosing and it increases the size of the surface area, which facilitates dissolving of the active substances from the plant matter. Keep the stems and veins though, they are not garbage, set them aside and use them later to make a concoction.

To make your own Kratom leaves powder, you need a whirling blade blender or something similar (such as an electric spice mill) to crush the dried leaves and a fine mesh colander to screen out the veins and stems; you want to use the powder that passes through the colander, preferably with the consistence of baking powder.

These methods of ingestion are only suggestions ... you can always come up with your own idea.

Kratom Capsules

The taste of Kratom is not really enjoyable or pleasant and some say it tastes "earthy and bitter", others simply dub the taste as obnoxious. To get around the flavor, you can gel-cap your Kratom powder with a capsule machines. Don't worry, non-commercial manual encapsulating machines are rather inexpensive. Now you have the advantage of skipping the taste, but on the downside you have to invest some time to prepare your caps.

Kratom Tea

Kratom Tea

The term "tea" is a wild exaggeration when used in the context of Kratom ingestion; the better term would be concoction because the taste of the brew is far from the savoring experience of drinking tea. For a tea (shudder) you can use the stems and veins (the ones you set aside when we told you to), crushed leaves or powder.

Powder works much better than crushed leaves or the stems and veins. To make the concoction add your crushed dried leaves or powder (how much depends on individual preferences, tolerance, desired effect etc.) to about 1 liter of water and let it boil for 5-15 minutes before adding a cinnamon stick (NOT powder). Let the brew simmer for at least 10-15 minutes more or until the original volume is reduced by about 50%.

Now add a sweetener of your choice and a bit of ginger root or powder. The result is a fairly good-tasting tea resembling Chai-tea. If you want a clear tea, use a tea strainer. You can experiment with this recipe of course, some people add Linden blossoms, chamomile, Lotus stamens, Blue Egyptian Water Lily or Red Poppy flowers and others prefer a good pinch of maté or black tea, the choice is totally up to you.

The alkaloids are not easily soluble in water, so the residue you filtered out still contains active substances - re-use the residues by repeating the steps mentioned above or add them to the next concoction. The procedure is relatively time consuming and the potency of the brew varies, but the big advantage is the enhanced taste.

Kratom Water Or Juice

A fast method to ingest Kratom powder is probably by simply rinsing it down. But, "simply" is not simple in this case, because if you do it wrong, you will end up like one of those jesters who dared to try to swallow a spoon full of cinnamon powder ("the cinnamon challenge") and inhale the powder, which is rather unpleasant and definitely not wise, to say the least.

So, to safely swallow Kratom powder, hyperventilate several times and then take a deeeeep breath and hold it, before you exhale very slooooowly through your nose and while doing so, you put a teaspoon of the powder in your mouth and have a small sip of water or a juice of choice, but DON'T swallow yet.

Now you mush the matter around in your mouth until it is thoroughly mixed with the liquid you used and then rinse it all down with a glass of water, respectively juice of choice. Fruit juices like lemon or grapefruit sap work great, because the Kratom alkaloids become soluble in certain acids and the effects come on much faster. Repeat this procedure for every tea spoon.

Kratom Applesauce

Mixing Kratom powder with chunky applesauce is a fairly palatable and very quick way to ingest Kratom. Add your Kratom powder, a sweetener such as honey or sugar and a tad of cinnamon to the applesauce and stir thoroughly before consuming it. Don't let it stand too long or the bitter taste of Kratom will ruin the "sweet sensation" you originally wanted to achieve. We recommend chunky applesauce because if the powder is not fine enough, it can make the applesauce gritty.

Kratom Sandwich

Another quick method of consuming Kratom powder is by mixing it with honey and then spreading it over a slice of dark bread. Another slice on top is optional.

Kratom Booze

The alkaloids in Kratom are soluble in alcohol. To make your own "Kratom booze" use some high proof alcohol such as vodka, whiskey or rum (some claim warm Sake works best) to mix your crushed leaves or powder into. After some time, the leaves are strained and the resulting brew can then be improved in taste by adding sweeteners or spices. "Kratom booze" can be stored for months.

Smoking Kratom!?

YIKES! Sufficient explanation? OK, let's delve a little deeper into this ... Smoking Kratom is not known to produce any of the desired effects (or only to a very little extend). Some people with a very low tolerance may feel a "touch" of short (most likely only about 30 minutes) and subtle effects, but the disgusting taste and texture of the smoke and its impact on the lung are a high price for being "touched" by Kratom. Not recommended, although, some tribes in South-East Asia traditionally smoke Kratom.
