Zamnesia - Elecampane: An Ornamental Giant
Elecampane, also known as Inula helenium, horse-heal or elfdock, is a member of the Asteraceae (sunflower) family. The plant is widespread and adaptable, and is native from Europe all the way to western Asia. Plants within the Inula genus may be annuals, herbaceous perennials, or sub-shrubs. Zamnesia sells elecampane seeds in packs of 20.
ELECAMPANE CHARACTERISTICS
Elecampane features large-toothed leaves accompanied by flowers comprised of many yellow strands with a central disc, appearing very much like sunflowers. These plants can grow up to heights of 2.5m, making them an impressive ornamental centrepiece in your garden. Elecampane takes between 2–5 years to reach its peak height.
Flower heads can reach sizes of 5cm in width. Elecampane prefers full sunlight, but can also be grown in partial shade. This makes south-facing, west-facing, or east-facing conditions optimal. Elecampane prefers a loamy, clay-like soil that is moist yet well-draining. The plant can tolerate media with an acidic, alkaline, and neutral pH.
Elecampane is a great plant to cultivate for those with an interest in herbalism. The plant has been used traditionally to prevent coughs, loosen phlegm, and assist with asthma and bronchitis.
Elecampane is also used in both France and Switzerland to make absinthe, an anise-flavoured spirit alcohol that is extremely potent.
