Zamnesia - Gotu Kola: Popular Oriental Herbal Medicine

Centella asiatica or simply Centella is also called Asiatic pennywort or Indian pennywort. It is a perennial herbaceous plant that belongs to the family of Umbellifere (Apiaceae). It is found throughout India and South East Asia where the plant grows in moist places up to an altitude of 1800 m. It can also be found in other places, such as in South Africa and Eastern Europe.

The plant loves tropical swampy areas where it grows developing a slender stem and creeping stolons. Its flowers are white or pinkish to red in colour and grow in small, rounded groups near the surface of the soil.

Across the Asian continent, including India and South East Asia, Centella asiatica is popular as a culinary vegetable and as medicinal herb. In traditional medicine, it has been used for thousands of years due to the plants varied medicinal properties.

Centella asiatica is widely used as a blood purifier, for treating high blood pressure, for memory enhancement and for promoting longevity. In traditional Ayurvedic medicine, Centella is the main herb for revitalizing the nerves and brain cells. Healers in the East have been using the plant to treat emotional disorders such as depression and anxiety.

The main compounds in Centella believed to be responsible for the plant’s medicinal properties are triterpenoids and saponins, a class of chemical compounds found in various plant species.

In Myanmar cuisine, raw pennywort is the main ingredient to make a salad that is prepared with onions, crushed peanuts and bean powder. The salad is seasoned with limejuice and fish sauce.

In Sri Lanka, Centella is the most predominant of all locally available leafy greens, where it is called gotu kola. The name gotu refers to the plants’ conical shape with kola meaning leaf. It is often served to rice and curry.

In Indonesia, the leaves of the plant are used to make sambai oi peuga-ga which is a type of salad. It is also mixed into asinan, a pickled vegetable or fruit dish.

In Vietnam and Thailand, Centella leaves are used for preparing nutritious drinks or are sometimes eaten in raw form as a salad or in cold rolls. The drinks are sold by vendors at the famous Chatuchak Weekend Market in Bangkok.
