Syrian rue seeds form the basis of red and yellow textile dyes, inks, and as a natural tattoo ink, but have also been used medicinally and ritually for centuries. There’s speculation that it was the Soma or Haoma of the ancient Persians.
The capsules are thrown on fires across the Middle East as ritual incense. Seeds are used as a painkiller, and lab tests have shown the active ingredient harmaline is a central nervous system stimulant and reversible MAO inhibitor.
Smoke from the seeds has been found by scientists to kill algae, bacteria, stomach parasites, certain moulds, lice, and protozoa (including malaria). Peganum harmala has antioxidant and anti-mutagenic properties and has demonstrated effectiveness against tumours.
PEGANUM HARMALA ACTIVE Compounds
The active alkaloids of Syrian rue seeds are the MAOI-A (monoamine oxidase inhibitor A) compounds: harmane, harmine, harmaline and harmalol, which together can make up nearly 6% dried weight.
PEGANUM HARMALA DOSAGE
A pack contains 10 grams of seeds, and a teaspoonful of crushed seeds (3-4 grams) is enough to activate the DMT in ayahuasca analogues.
The seeds have anti-depressant effect, and produce a dreamlike state at higher doses.
Can induce nausea at higher doses. Not for use by under-18s, or when pregnant or nursing. Do not use in combination with alcohol, medicines or other stimulants, or if using MAO inhibitors, anti-depressants or other psycho-stimulants. Store in a cool, dry place and of course, out of reach of children.
