Picture the job in order. You've got a pack of feminized seeds, a warm corner of the flat, and no interest in losing half of them in week one. Step one is getting the shell to crack. Step two is giving that taproot something soft and airy to dig into. Step three is moving the seedling into a proper pot without touching its roots. Everything on this shelf does one of those three things; lights, fans, feed, and pest gear sit in the rest of the growshop.
The paper towel method is the one everybody tries first, and it works. Damp kitchen roll, a plate on top, somewhere dark and warm, and you can watch progress. The catch is the move: once that white taproot is out, you have to lift the seed and put it somewhere else, and that's where fingers snap roots. More seeds are lost to a clumsy transfer than to a bad seed.
A short soak is the middle road. It softens the shell and gets moisture into the seed before it goes into a medium, and it's where Seedbooster earns its place: 1 ml, roughly 20 drops, into 1 litre of water. Use that solution for the soak or for the first waterings, prepare it fresh, and use it within 24 hours. It's a nutrient and enzyme blend meant to get the seed moving and push early roots, not a substitute for decent conditions.
Our own preference is the third route: seed straight into a hydrated coco plug, plug into a propagator, lid on, hands off. You see nothing for a few days, but nothing gets handled either. If you're the type who lifts the paper towel every two hours, this saves your seeds from you.
Coco Germination Plugs come dry, and a dry plug feels like a dense little biscuit with a faint coconut smell. Hydrate one and it goes dark, springy, and open enough that you can see air pockets in the fibre. The plugs are 5 cm, the coir is 100% natural, the pH sits at 5.8 to 6.2, and the EC is deliberately low so a seed doesn't get hit with salts before it has roots. The 6-pack matches the slots in the Zamnesia Seed Propagator, each roughly 5.4 cm wide and 5 cm high, so plugs sit flush instead of leaning over.
Plain soil in a small pot is the obvious alternative and it works, though seedlings in soil are harder to read: you can't tell what the roots are doing until they show at the drainage holes, and potting on means lifting a root ball by hand. A coco plug goes into the pot whole, coir and all, so nothing gets touched. Rockwool cubes are the other common starter medium you'll read about, but we don't carry them, so the real choice on this shelf is coco plugs or soil.
Here's the honest limitation of any starter plug: there's almost no food in it. Coir holds moisture and air, and that's the whole job. Once the first true leaves open, the plant wants feeding, which is why the Feminized Starter Bundle includes All-in-One Liquid 250 ml alongside the germination gear for soil grows.
Work backwards from how often you can realistically check on things. Coco plugs in a vented propagator suit growers who want a quiet week and a plug they can bury whole. A small pot of soil suits growers staying in soil who don't mind lifting seedlings by hand at potting on. Either way, match the plug size to the propagator slots, because plugs that lean over dry out unevenly.
The Zamnesia Seed Propagator is a sturdy black base with a removable tray and a clear vented lid. The lid does two jobs: it keeps humidity high around the plugs and it lets light through, so you don't have to pull it off the moment the first shoot appears. The vents are the part people forget. Open them a little as seedlings straighten up and you get airflow over the plugs instead of stagnant, wet air under plastic.
Watering is where beginners go wrong. Plugs should be damp, not dripping: a hydrated plug should feel like a wrung-out sponge, not a wet flannel. The removable tray makes this easy: water into the tray, tip out what the plugs don't take, and you've dodged the classic soggy-bottom problem.
One thing this propagator does not have is a heating element, and neither does any other propagator here. We don't stock heat mats either. If your room runs cold, park the propagator somewhere naturally warm rather than improvising with a radiator. Warmth needs to be steady, not a peak in the afternoon and a slump overnight.
A propagator is really three parts: a base, a tray, and a clear dome, and the dome does the heavy lifting. It holds moisture around the plugs so young roots aren't fighting dry room air, while the vents let you ease that humidity down as the seedlings firm up. The Propagator Pro 2 works the same way, and its own text puts germination at between 1 and 6 days, so the waiting is shorter than most people expect.
Keep these five things in range and most packs of seeds behave themselves.
Cloning covers the second half of this shelf. You take a cutting from a healthy mother plant, trim it clean, dip the cut end in rooting gel, and set it into a hydrated plug under a lid. Root stimulants go into the water for the first weeks, feeding the root zone while there is barely any root zone to feed.
Cuttings behave differently to seeds. A fresh cutting still loses moisture through its leaves while it has no roots to replace it, so the closed lid and high humidity aren't optional. Expect losses anyway. Even experienced growers write off a couple out of a batch.
The trade-off against seeds is simple. Cuttings give you copies of a plant you already know: same growth pattern, same smell, same timing. Seeds give you variation and a clean start with no pest history carried over from a mother plant. Plenty of growers keep both going, seeds on this shelf, cuttings from last season's best plant.
Boosters and stimulators are support acts, not headliners. Seedbooster goes into the soak water or the first waterings at 1 ml, roughly 20 drops, per 1 litre, mixed fresh and used within 24 hours. Rooting gel does the same kind of work at the cut end of a clone, sealing it and holding a rooting agent right where the new roots will form. Root stimulants then go in the water through the first weeks, but none of them will rescue an old seed, a drowned plug, or a cold cupboard.
Move the seedling when roots show at the sides or bottom of the plug. The whole point of a plug is that you plant it, coir and all, into a small pot without ever touching a root. Bury it so the top of the plug sits just under the surface, water lightly, and let the plant settle for a few days before you feed it properly.
Almost every early problem comes down to light distance, water, or airflow. Work through the list below before you reach for another product, because most of these cost nothing to fix. The usual problems, and what actually fixes them:
Once your seedlings leave the propagator they're fair game for fungus gnats, thrips, and spider mites, so start checking leaf undersides weekly from the day the lid comes off. Sticky traps and pest control gear live with the other grow supplies in the growshop, and dealing with pests on three seedlings is far easier than dealing with them on three flowering plants.
So, which combination do you actually buy? If you already own a propagator, just add the Coco Germination Plugs. If you're starting from zero, the Seed Propagation Bundle pairs the plugs with the propagator so the sizes match, and the Complete Germination Bundle adds Seedbooster to run the full sequence: soak, sprout, settle. Going into soil for a photoperiod grow, the Feminized Starter Bundle is the one we'd hand you, because All-in-One Liquid covers the months after germination too. Tribe members can put loyalty points towards the Coco Plugs Bundle instead. If it's a present for someone who has never grown anything, iGrowCan x Zamnesia Seeds (Runtz Auto) puts Runtz Auto seeds, a germination plug, and 1.7 l of coco compost in one can. And if you'd rather start with another brand's kit, the Plagron Seedbox Germination Kit covers the same early stage.
Paper towel works, and it's free. The risk is the transfer: once the taproot is out you have to move the seed by hand, which is where most people damage it. A propagator with coco plugs lets you sow the seed once and leave it, and the clear vented lid keeps humidity around the plugs while light still reaches the seedling.
Coco plugs are the more forgiving option. They hold moisture and air in balance, sit at pH 5.8 to 6.2 with a low seed-safe EC, and they're sized to drop straight into the Zamnesia Seed Propagator. Plain soil works too, though a seed in a pot of soil is harder to keep evenly moist and you cannot lift it to check the root.
Add 1 ml, about 20 drops, to 1 litre of water and mix it through properly. Use that solution when you soak your seeds or when you water seedlings in their first days of growth. Make it fresh each time and use it within 24 hours, and keep the bottle somewhere cool, dry, and out of direct sunlight.
We won't give you a fixed number, because seed age, warmth, and how wet the medium is all move it around. Watch for the shell splitting and a white taproot rather than counting days. If a plug has been sitting soaked with nothing happening, the medium is usually the problem, not the seed.
