Guayusa is a great alternative to coffee because its use does not leave you exhausted when the effects have worn off. The dried leaves are used in preparing a concoction just like a tea, but botanically it is no kinsman of tea - actually it is the Amazonian cousin of Ilex paraguariensis (commonly known as Yerba Mate). Guayusa extract is available in dried and liquid form.
Guayusa - A great alternative to coffee from the Amazonian Rainforest
Guayusa (binomial name "Ilex guayusa") is a great alternative to coffee - it brings on an energizing effect similar to coffee, but the caffeine release is more gentle and sustainable, creating mental strength and an increased focus. As a bonus, Guayusa contains amino acids, antioxidants, theobromine (a bitter alkaloid of the cacao plant that induces a soothing effect) and L-theanine (a glutamic acid that has been shown to reduce physical and mental stress). Moreover, after the effect has worn off, you won't feel the exhaustion as you would after the comedown from a day on coffee.
Ilex guayusa is a tall tree native to the upper Amazonian regions of Ecuador, northeastern Peru and southwestern Colombia and has been cultivated for over 2000 years, but in the wild it is a rather rare find. Guayusa is brewed using the dried leaves of the tree just like a tea, but Ilex guayusa is not kindred with tea - actually it is the Amazonian cousin of Ilex paraguariensis (commonly known as Yerba Mate) from the Atlantic Rainforest in and around Argentina.
Dry extract 13:1: one dosage is about 0.1-0.2 grams. Liquid extract 2:1: one dosage is about 1-2ml.
