The realistic version of this shopping trip: one packet of cactus seed, one packet of poppy, a bag of grit, and then a year of staring at a propagation tray. What Counts as a Psychoactive Plant Seed

They are seeds of plants with long histories of ritual, folk and ornamental use, sold for growing and collecting. Some are straightforward garden annuals, like the poppies. Others, such as Aztekium ritteri, are collector cacti that creep along for decades.

Mescaline, Tryptamines and the Other Alkaloids, Family by Family

The chemistry splits by family. Mescaline is the alkaloid botanists associate with peyote and the columnar cacti, while ergine is the tryptamine tied to Hawaiian Baby Woodrose seed. Elsewhere you get harmine in Peganum harmala, thebaine in Papaver somniferum and cathinone in Catha edulis. We list these names because growers ask about them.

Mescaline Cacti Seed Sown on Grit: Peyote, San Pedro and Echinopsis macrogona

The seed is tiny, roughly the size of ground black pepper, so sow it on the surface and don't bury it. San Pedro (Echinopsis pachanoi) is the one we'd hand a first-timer: humid, warm and shaded to sprout, then air circulation so mould doesn't take the tray. Peruvian Torch germinates in about 10-14 days, Echinopsis macrogona is close enough that anyone who has raised a San Pedro will find it familiar, and Bolivian Torch rounds out the columnar group. Peyote stays button-small for ages and likes a mineral mix of 50% sand, 25% grit or bims and 25% potting soil, with a minimum of 10°C, while Aztec Cactus (Aztekium ritteri) grows at a glacial crawl. Poppies, Ephedra and the Odd Ones Out

Poppy Seed That Sows Itself: Papaver somniferum and California Poppy

Papaver somniferum is the easiest thing here: a hardy annual that hits about a metre, throws papery flowers in red, purple, pink and white, and sheds its own seed in autumn. California poppy comes as 100 seeds, has blue-green foliage, shuts its petals at night and on grey days, and shrugs off drought.

Ephedra viridis swaps leaves for rigid yellow-green jointed stems, and Ephedra sinica (ma huang) sits alongside it; both are slow, dioecious shrubs, so sow the whole pack if you want males and females. Khat wants real warmth, so in a cool northern garden Green Mormon Tea is the more forgiving shrub.

Getting Stubborn Seed to Wake Up

Three things decide whether a tray works: drainage, warmth and not giving up early. Ephedra germinates irregularly, so don't bin a tray at day ten because half of it looks empty. Poppy seed sprouts in about a week if you scatter it on fertilised soil and keep it damp without drowning it. Overwatering is how most growers lose cactus seedlings and poppy sprouts to rot.

Slow Plants Reward Growers Who Wait

Most of this catalogue is ethnobotanical and ornamental interest first: a peyote button on a bright shelf, a Klip Dagga spike in the border, California poppies feeding bees all summer. Grow the cacti dry and mineral, give the poppies and ephedra open sun and free drainage, and label your trays, because seedling cacti look identical for the first year.
