Rolling papers and accessories: how to pick yours
Size first: 1¼, king size or king size slim
Regular and 1¼ papers suit a quick solo smoke. King size, at roughly 10 cm, is the go-to for joints you plan to share. King size slim keeps the length but trims the width, so less paper burns with every draw and more of your weed's flavour comes through. If you're unsure, start with king size slim: nearly every brand we carry makes one, and it's the most forgiving format to roll.
What the paper is made of matters more than the logo
Run an Elements rice paper between your fingers and it feels like tracing paper: almost weightless, slow-burning, barely any ash. Hemp papers are slightly thicker with a faint nutty note, and they grip better while rolling. The catch with ultra-thin rice: sweaty hands and wind are its enemies, so it's not the best beach paper. Unbleached papers skip the chlorine treatment entirely, which is why they're brown instead of white.

Filters and tips: carton or charcoal
A rolled carton tip keeps crumbs out of your mouth and gives the joint structure. An activated charcoal filter goes further and traps part of the tar, for a cooler, smoother hit. Clear, gold and flavoured: the fun stuff
Papers don't have to be paper. Clear cellulose papers let you see exactly what you're smoking, and flavoured hemp wraps add a fruity layer that works surprisingly well with the right strain. Novelty papers burn a little differently than the classics, so save them for a relaxed session rather than a windy festival.
Rolling papers: questions and answers
- Which rolling paper size should I get?
Sharing? Go king size or king size slim (about 10 cm). Smoking solo? 1¼ or regular is plenty. King size slim is the best all-rounder: full length, less paper per draw.
- What's the difference between rice and hemp papers?
Rice papers are thinner, burn slower and add almost no taste, but they're slippery to roll. Hemp papers grip better and carry a light nutty note. Beginners usually get on better with hemp.
- Are unbleached papers better?
They skip the chlorine bleaching step, which is why they're brown. You avoid unnecessary processing and many smokers find the taste cleaner. RAW, BEUZ and our own Zamnesia Unbleached line are all solid picks.
- Do activated charcoal filters actually work?
Yes. The charcoal traps part of the tar and fine particles, so the hit feels cooler and less scratchy than through a plain carton tip. Use a fresh one per joint.
- Are pre-rolled cones easier than rolling?
Much easier. You fill them, tamp lightly and twist the top shut. A cone filler speeds it up further and stops spillage. Rolling still wins on cost per smoke, though.
- What are hemp wraps?
Tobacco-free blunt wraps made from hemp, usually flavoured. They burn slower and thicker than a paper, so expect a longer session with more taste.
