Filter Bag

Filter Box

Mushrooms want it warm and humid, roughly 23 to 28°C with high relative humidity. A heat mat nudges the temperature up a few degrees, and a heat guard stops the base of the kit from cooking. One thing to watch: a mat without a thermostat can overheat, so keep an eye on the temperature rather than leaving it running.
The clean-room basics
Contamination is the main reason a grow fails, and the warm, damp conditions mushrooms love are just as good for mould and bacteria. Work as sterile as you can with latex or nitrile gloves, alcohol wipes to disinfect your surface, a scalpel and tweezers for precise work, and a mouth mask to keep your breath away from the substrate. Parafilm seals jars and petri dishes airtight. One ungloved hand can spoil an entire tub.
Substrate and storage
If you are building beyond a ready-made kit, it starts with substrate. A Cocobrick swells with water into a light coco base, and pre-sterilised substrate saves you the pressure-cooker step. A filter bag lets air in while keeping outside spores out. After harvest, silica gel packets keep dried mushrooms crisp and at full strength.
