Relaxation Herbs, Calming Teas and Sleep Supplements

Relaxation herbs and calming teas are the low-effort way to wind down. This is where the loose herbs live, alongside ready-made evening blends, capsules and a couple of sprays: chamomile and mulungu on the loose shelf, ashwagandha in a capsule. Some of it is for the end of a long day, some for the middle of a stressful one. Pick by the moment you need it, not by the label.

Choosing between a herb, a tea and a capsule

Everything in this category does roughly the same job in a different shape. A jar of loose herb asks you to boil water and wait ten minutes. A capsule asks nothing at all. That difference matters more than the ingredient list, because the one you'll actually use is the one that fits your evening.

Which relaxation herb is right for you

Six of the loose herbs here are the traditional ones. What separates them is the part of the plant you brew and how it tastes.

HerbBotanical namePackWhat it tastes like
ChamomileMatricaria50gApple and dry hay
MulunguErythrina mulungu80gEarthy, faintly bitter bark
Lemon balmMelissa officinalis20gSharp lemon, no sourness
ValerianValeriana80gPungent, an acquired taste
Hops flowersHumulus lupulus20gResinous and bitter
ThymeThymus vulgaris20gSavoury, kitchen-familiar

Herbs for sleep and evening calm

Valerian root, hops flowers and chamomile are the classic end-of-day trio, and all three turn up again inside the Natural Relax capsules. Brew them late rather than early.

Herbs for daytime stress relief

Ashwagandha is the adaptogen of the group and is not sedating, which is why it suits the middle of a difficult day. The StressLess spray works the same slot, pairing 200mg reishi with 50mg ashwagandha. Lemon balm sits comfortably in daylight too.

Caffeine-free options

All of it, in fact. None of the loose herbs is a true tea leaf, and every Losse-T blend is caffeine-free, so nothing in this category will keep you up by accident.

Popular relaxation herbs explained

Mulungu

South American bark, sold here as 80g of loose material. It has been used traditionally as an evening infusion, and it is the one people ask us about most in this category. The brew is dark and tastes of bark, which is exactly what it is.

Chamomile

The 50g bag is the biggest of the small herbs and the one to start with if you have never brewed anything but a teabag. Whole flower heads, apple on the nose, and forgiving if you steep it too long.

Thyme

Thymus vulgaris in a 20g bag, and the one that surprises people who only know it from a roasting tin. Savoury rather than sweet, and it takes well to being blended with chamomile rather than drunk on its own. Worth noting that catnip (Nepeta cataria) on the same shelf comes either shredded at 80g for brewing or as a pack of 20 seeds for growing, and those two are not interchangeable.

How to brew a calming herbal tea

Water just off the boil, roughly a teaspoon per cup, lid on, five to ten minutes. The lid matters with lemon balm and chamomile because the aromatic oils leave with the steam. Bark and root, meaning mulungu and valerian, want the longer end and a proper strainer, since everything here is loose-leaf rather than bagged.

Relaxation teas versus single herbs

The five Losse-T blends are pre-mixed and ready to scoop, including Hemp Relax, which is also gluten-free, lactose-free and unsweetened. Single herbs cost you a decision but let you set the ratio. Capsules skip the kettle entirely: Natural Relax puts valerian root extract 399mg, rhodiola 300mg, passionflower 300mg, chamomile 75mg, hops 51mg and L-theanine 150mg into three capsules, so one pot covers most of the table above and lasts 30 days. Two evening products are easy to mix up: the Dream Mist spray carries 0.81mg melatonin plus GABA and lemon balm in three sprays, while the sleep gummies carry 0.29mg. Same idea, very different amounts.

Relaxation herbs: your questions

What is the difference between the relaxation teas and the single herbs?

The blends from Losse-T are pre-mixed and caffeine-free, so you scoop and brew. The single herbs let you control the ratio and combine them yourself, and they come in bigger amounts per bag. Start with a blend if you are new to this, move to single herbs once you know what you like.

How long should I steep these?

Five to ten minutes with a lid on for leaves and flowers like chamomile and lemon balm. Longer for bark and root such as mulungu and valerian. All of it is loose-leaf, so you will need a strainer or an infuser basket.

Do any of these contain caffeine?

The Losse-T evening blends are caffeine-free, and so are the loose herbs, none of which is a true tea leaf. If you want to be certain for a specific product, the caffeine field is listed on its own page.

Can I use more than one at a time?

Plenty of people brew a blend and take a capsule, and Natural Relax already combines six ingredients in one dose. Just avoid doubling the same ingredient from two products, and read the label of anything containing melatonin, since the amounts vary between the spray and the gummies.

Which one should I pick for daytime rather than night?

Ashwagandha and the StressLess spray are aimed at the middle of the day, and neither is a sedative. The evening blends, Dream Mist and the gummies are built for the end of it. Inner Peace Tea sits comfortably in either.
