Bolivian Torch 'Melted Wax - Bonobo' (Echinopsis lageniformis)
Ribs that should run straight instead fuse and ripple like dripping candle wax, the look behind 'Melted Wax - Bonobo', a rare semi-monstrose Bolivian Torch (Echinopsis lageniformis, formerly Trichocereus bridgesii). Spines run sparse and scattered, not the species' usual even rows. A fast-growing Andean cutting, prized by collectors since no two plants melt the same way.

Bolivian Torch 'Melted Wax - Bonobo': a cactus that doesn't grow straight
A standard Bolivian Torch grows a tall, ribbed column with spines lined up in neat rows. The full collector name for this one is Echinopsis lageniformis f. monstrosa cv. "Melted Wax - Bonobo", and it throws that rulebook out. Growth points fire off wherever they like, so the ribs fuse, flatten and ripple instead of running straight, the surface looks almost poured, like wax that's cooled mid-drip. Spination follows the same chaos, long spines jut out at odd angles next to bare stretches, instead of the usual even honey-brown rows. No cutting will match the photo exactly, every plant melts and spines its own way.
From the Bolivian Andes to a Valencia collection
This cactus is native to the Bolivian Andes. For years the species was known as Trichocereus bridgesii, before the genus was folded into Echinopsis. This 'Bonobo' clone traces back to a collection in Valencia, Spain, and stays rare, passed around mostly among specialised European collectors rather than sold on general cactus shelves.
Growing your own melted column
Treat it like the fast grower it is. Use proper cactus soil, not standard potting mix, it drains quicker and stops the roots sitting wet. Water from below, more through spring and summer, almost nothing over winter. Keep the cutting in shade for its first month after potting, then move it into full sun. Care is no harder than a standard Bolivian Torch, same soil, same watering, only the final shape is unpredictable. One thing worth knowing: a rooted cutting can push out a stretch of normal, straight ribs before it starts melting again as it matures. That's not a fault, it's just how a semi-monstrose Echinopsis works, and it's a big part of the appeal.
