Velvet bean | Mucuna pruriens: Natural Mild Hallucinogenic

The Velvet bean (Mucuna pruriens) is a tropical plant that’s native to Africa and Asia. The plant develops bean pods that can be up to 15cm long, with 3 to 6 seeds per pod. The Velvet bean grows well in sandy soils where it requires a long growing season. In the Southeastern Coastal Plain, Velvet beans are often grown for late summer pasturage and soil improvement. All parts of the plant, including the seeds and the leaves can be used. Velvet beans come in a variety of colours, including white, black, brown, and spotted.

VELVET BEANS IN TRADITIONAL HERBAL MEDICINE

For centuries, the Velvet bean had been used in various cultures as a food or as a medicine. The Velvet bean contains a precursor to dopamine (L-Dihydroxyphenylalanine) as well as hallucinogenic tryptamines, which account for its stimulating effects and its perceived therapeutic applications. In herbal medicine, the dried leaves, the seeds or extracts made from the plant are sometimes used to improve sleep, to induce a pleasant sense of well-being or for toning muscles. In India and in Brazil, the Velvet bean is sometimes used in formulations for aphrodisiacs.

HOW TO USE VELVET BEANS

You can use all parts of the Velvet bean, including the seeds. You can grind them to a powder for consumption or make extracts from the plant. The dried leaves of the Velvet bean can also be smoked.

For a typical dose, take 5g (about 4 beans, depending on their size) of finely ground Velvet bean powder orally.

CAUTION

Avoid taking Velvet bean during pregnancy or if breastfeeding. Velvet bean may not be suitable for people taking antidiabetic medications. Velvet bean seed pods can cause irritation to the skin as a result of the hairs they are covered in. Always handle with care. Always consult with a healthcare professional if in doubt. Always start with a low dose if you’re not familiar with the effects.
