Northern Lights has been in circulation for four decades, which means the name now covers a lot of ground. Two of the 25 packs on this page are barely the same plant as the other 23. Here is what actually separates them.

Afghani hash plant, Thai sativa, Dutch finishing school

The strain started as an Afghani indica crossed into Thai sativa, then got selected down in the Netherlands through the Seed Bank of Holland under Nevil Schoenmakers. The keeper phenotype was Northern Lights #5, and it is the reason the modern plant is roughly 90% indica, short, and stubbornly consistent from seed to seed. When people search for the original Northern Lights seeds, that #5 line is what they mean. The Sensi Seeds Northern Lights 5 x Haze is the closest thing on this page to that pedigree, though the Haze half flips it to 70% sativa and a much more cerebral, longer-lasting buzz.

Resin, pine, and a body that stops arguing

Break a cured Northern Lights bud and you get a sweet-earthy hit with pine underneath, sometimes a citrus edge, and enough resin that your fingers stick to the grinder. The effect is heavy, warm and physical, the kind that lands in your shoulders after twenty minutes and keeps you on the sofa. Seven weeks of flower, 120cm of plant

Photoperiod Northern Lights finishes in 7-8 weeks, and Expert Seeds pushes theirs to 6-7. Indoors expect around 120cm and up to 500 g/m2 with a normal tent setup; outdoors the photoperiod versions stretch to 200-250cm and reward a warm, dry autumn. The plant stays squat and side-branches willingly, so it takes topping and low-stress training without sulking, and it packs well into a small SOG. Its weakness is the flip side of that density: fat, resinous colas in a humid tent are exactly what bud rot wants, so keep air moving through the canopy in the last fortnight.

Feminized, autoflower, or the one regular pack

Most of this page is feminized seeds, which is what you want if you plan to veg on 18/6 and flip when the plants are the size you like. Autoflowers cross in ruderalis so they flower on age instead of light, finishing 6-12 weeks from seed with no light switch at all.
