What makes cannabis turn purple

Anthocyanins sit in the plant the whole time, hidden under chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is what makes leaves green, and while the plant is growing hard it keeps producing more. In the last weeks of flower that production slows, the green fades, and the purple underneath finally shows. Cool night-time temperatures can push the effect further, but only on a plant that carries the genes.

Colour is not potency

The myth worth killing: purple does not mean stronger. Purple Haze looks spectacular and sits at 19% THC. Barney's Farm Purple Punch is far less photogenic and hits 25%. If potency is what you are after, read the number, not the picture.

Where purple genetics come from

The colour traces back to Afghan and Central Asian indica landraces, which is why so many purple strains lean indica and finish fast. Purple Queen crosses Hindu Kush with Purple Afghani. Kalini Asia pairs Black Domina with Purple Kush. The sativa side arrived later through Purple Thai, which is the parent behind Purple Haze and Pink Mist.

Growing purple weed

Most of these are rated easy and finish in 7 to 10 weeks, so colour costs you nothing in difficulty. Let night temperatures drop about 5 to 10 degrees below your day temperature in the last fortnight and the purple deepens. Do not chase it with cold on a plant that has no purple genetics, and do not freeze a plant to force it, because you will trade resin and yield for a colour that was never going to arrive.

One genuine outlier: Purple Haze x Malawi from ACE Seeds is 23% THC and pure sativa, but it wants 13 to 14 weeks of flowering and is rated hard. Beautiful plant, wrong first grow.
