Where the Skunk smell comes from
Skunk seeds carry the strain that gave modern cannabis its smell: sour, musky, a bit sweet underneath. The line goes back to a 1970s American breeding project that crossed Afghan indica with Colombian and Mexican sativas, and almost every commercial hybrid since has Skunk somewhere in its family tree. What Skunk cannabis actually is
Not one plant but a lineage. Skunk 1 stabilised the cross so it grew the same way every time, which is why breeders kept building on it rather than starting over. That reliability is still the selling point: most of these finish in 7 to 9 weeks, handle beginner mistakes, and yield heavily for the effort.
From Sacred Seeds to Skunk 1
The original lineage
The Sacred Seeds collective in California put the cross together, and Sam the Skunkman carried it to the Netherlands in the 1980s, where Dutch breeders turned it into the backbone of the seed industry. Sensi Seeds still sells that Skunk 1, and its spec sheet is honest about what it is: 65% indica, 7 to 8 weeks, high yields, rated moderate rather than easy.
What breeders built on top
Super Skunk crosses Skunk 1 with Afghani Hashplant for an 80% indica that is rated easy. Shiva Skunk adds Northern Lights 5 for 85% indica. Early Skunk brings in Early Pearl so it finishes outdoors in a short northern summer. Critical Skunk from Mr. Nice pushes the yield side, up to 800 g/m2 indoors.
Feminized, autoflowering or regular
Feminized is the default and gives you the biggest harvest. Autoflowers run on a clock instead of a light schedule: Original Auto Skunk from FastBuds does 20% THC in 8 to 9 weeks from seed, and Super Skunk Auto from Garden of Green reaches 22% but yields closer to 350 g/m2. Regulars are still here for breeders, including the Mr. Nice classics.

Two honest warnings before you order. The smell is not a marketing line: Skunk earns the name in flower and a carbon filter is not optional if anyone else lives in the building. And if this is your first grow, take Super Skunk over Skunk 1 itself, because Sensi rates the original moderate while Super Skunk is rated easy and finishes in the same 7 to 8 weeks.
