A chillum is a straight, cone-shaped pipe with no water filter. You pack herb or hash in one end, drop a small screen or chillum stone in front of it, then smoke it upright with both hands cupped around the mouthpiece. It is the same one-hitter style Indian sadhus have used for centuries, and it is still the most direct way to smoke: no glass chamber, no rolling paper, just you and the bowl. Because there is no water to cool the smoke, the hit lands warmer and stronger than a bong, so ease into your first pull.
The material changes how your chillum feels, how hot it gets and how the smoke tastes. Here is how the four we carry stack up.
| Material | Feel and weight | Flavour | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Borosilicate glass | Light, clear, see-through | Purest, adds nothing | Taste and easy cleaning |
| Italian clay / ceramic | Solid, traditional | Slightly earthy | The classic sadhu feel |
| Soapstone | Heavy, stays cool in the hand | Neutral, mild | A hand-carved piece that ages well |
| Wood | Lightest, pocket-friendly | Warm, a little spicy | Smoking on the move |
A blown-glass piece like the Marley Natural chillum is the one we would hand a flavour chaser. Soapstone is what we would pick for something that feels good in the hand and picks up a patina over the years. Wood is the travel option, though it needs a bit more care than glass or stone.
The chillum stone (or a small metal screen) is the one accessory you should not skip. It sits in the cone and blocks burnt bits from shooting into your mouth while letting the smoke pull through freely. A clean stone gives a smoother draw and keeps ash out of every hit. Swap it when it clogs and the pipe keeps pulling like new.
Not sure a chillum is your thing? A bong cools and filters the smoke through water for bigger, softer hits, while a one-hitter is built for a single quick pull. A chillum sits in between: more herb than a one-hitter, more portable and social than a bong, and nothing to clean but the pipe and its stone. Keep an ashtray nearby for the spent ash, and give the cone a soak with proper cleaning gear every so often.
