Helping to prevent water evaporation Cerastium puts on a show of perfect white flowers in early spring.
CERASTIUM
Cerastium (Cerastium biebersteinii) is a low growing short-lived ground clover with a profuse shower of white flowers in late spring and early summer. It is a rapid growing perennial that forms a thick mat of silvery grey leaves that can become invasive, so don't be shy to really hack into it if it starts to get too greedy for room. If you want an annual filling the space above that mat, Nasturtium 'Single Flowered' sprawls and scrambles instead of hugging the soil. Red Coreopsis works another layer again, standing well clear of the silver leaves and keeping bees busy right through summer.
It can be a great source of raw material for composts during its relatively short life providing a lot of foliage in a very short time. Cerastium is a great living mulch that provides dense shade for your garden soil mitigating moisture loss due to evaporation. Being a low, spreading grower it asks for full sun and gritty, well-drained ground, and it makes a tidy edging plant among the other flower seeds we stock. Where Cerastium creeps across the surface, the Sunflower Buddy Pack goes straight up, casting its shade from above instead.
Plants do care who are living next door and examples of companion planting are found in the prehistoric archaeological records of Europe, Asia and the Americas. Plant diversity means overall garden health, rich soil and less need for commercial fertilizers and insecticides.
