Granddaddy Purple at a glance

Every pack here sits in the same band of indica dominance, between 70/30 and 75/25. The THC range runs from 19% on the two autoflowers to 25% on the Blimburn Seeds cut, with the two photoperiod packs from Zamnesia Seeds and Royal Queen Seeds sitting at 22% and 20%. Photoperiod plants flower in 9-10 weeks; the Royal Queen auto is the quickest flowering time on the page at 8-9 weeks from seed. Indoors expect 90-120cm and up to 500 g/m2. It is a forgiving grow, and it genuinely likes cool weather, which is rarer than it sounds.

Effects and when to use it

This is an evening strain and it does not pretend otherwise. The listed effects across our packs are relaxing, body-buzz, soothing and sleepy, which is the couch-lock end of the indica scale, and the Royal Queen photoperiod pack is the one that lists sleepy outright. The Blimburn cut is the odd one out, adding cerebral and happy to the mix alongside the heaviest THC figure. If you want something to stay productive on, this is the wrong plant. That is the honest limitation: GDP is a sofa strain, where our Kush seeds cover a similar body-heavy feel with more variety in the head.

Flavour and aroma

Break a cured bud and you get sweet grape first, then berry, with earth underneath. Royal Queen list pine and herbal notes on their photoperiod version; their auto leans candy and berry instead. The terpene mix usually credited for that grape-and-pepper character is myrcene with caryophyllene. It is a smell that fills a room fast, so plan your extraction before flowering, not after.

Genetics and history

Ken Estes developed Granddaddy Purple in Mendocino County, California, and it has been the reference purple indica ever since. The lineage is genuinely disputed: the original was never formally confirmed, and our breeders do not agree. Royal Queen Seeds and Blimburn Seeds both build theirs from Purple Urkle crossed with Big Bud, while our own Zamnesia Seeds pack lists Purple Urkle x Purple Kush. In practice you are buying a breeder's interpretation of a California classic rather than one fixed recipe, which is worth knowing before you decide the packs are interchangeable.

Growing Granddaddy Purple seeds

The purple is not guaranteed. Those colours come from anthocyanins, pigments the plant produces more of when night temperatures drop late in flower. Keep the tent warm and even and you will grow perfectly good green GDP. Let the nights run cool in the last few weeks and you get the deep violet the strain is famous for. That same cold tolerance is why it works outdoors in continental and temperate climates where softer strains struggle.

Indoors the Zamnesia Seeds photoperiod stays compact at 90cm, the rest sit around 120cm, and all four that publish a figure reach up to 500 g/m2. Outdoors the Royal Queen photoperiod is the heavyweight at up to 600g per plant, while the autos top out near 150g. Beginners should start with an auto and skip the light-schedule decision entirely.
