Three Stones Beat Twenty on Your First Order

For a first set, we'd go Clear Quartz for the translucent look (mined mostly in the USA, Brazil, and Russia), Obsidian for the volcanic story behind it, and Tiger's Eye for colour. Clear Quartz is silicon dioxide, the same silicon dioxide you'll find in Tiger's Eye and Strawberry Quartz. Obsidian is a mineraloid made from natural glass, found around volcanic activity in Central America, Guatemala, and Mexico. Tiger's Eye is a quartz stone from South Africa and Australia with red, brown, and golden bands running through it. If you want more colour on the shelf, Amethyst, Amazonite, Lapis Lazuli, and Malachite are the ones people reach for.

Natural or Polished, and the Colour Shelf You're Building

Clear Quartz and Tiger's Eye come in both raw and tumbled finishes. Tumbled pieces feel cool and slick, almost like a worry stone, while raw ones keep their rough edges and catch the light unevenly. Obsidian in the hand is the one that surprises people: heavy for its size, glassy, cold for a good few seconds. Grouping by colour is the easy way to build a display: greens with Unakite, Malachite, and Amazonite, blues with Aquamarine, Lapis Lazuli, and Blue Goldstone, pinks with Pink Opal, Strawberry Quartz, and Salt Rock.

Mohs Hardness and Keeping Them Together

Quartz stones sit around 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, Obsidian nearer 5, and Salt Rock down around 2, so the soft ones pick up scratches if you tip everything into one bowl. Give the softest pieces their own pouch and let the quartz share a dish.

Single Specimens, Not Geodes or Clusters

Every piece here is one hand-sized 3-5 cm stone, so you won't find a hollow geode or a big crystal cluster on a base in this range. If the cluster look is what you're after, three or four raw Clear Quartz pieces set close together on a shelf gets you most of the way there.

Looking for Selenite or Rose Quartz?

Neither one is in this range at the moment. For the pale, translucent look people want from selenite, Clear Quartz is the closest match, and for the soft pink of rose quartz, Pink Opal and Strawberry Quartz do the same job on a shelf.

What Each Stone Is Traditionally Linked To

These are traditions and beliefs, not verified effects, so treat them as folklore you can enjoy. Obsidian is often used in feng shui and divination, and many believe it clears negativity from a space. Clear Quartz picked up the nickname "Master Healer" in the crystal community. Strawberry Quartz is associated with the heart chakra and grounding, Unakite with the heart and third eye during meditation, and Tiger's Eye with the solar plexus. Blue Goldstone is the honest outlier here: it's man-made, glass heated and infused with quartz sand, and it's kept as a good luck charm rather than dug out of the ground. If you like the starry effect but don't want a rare quartz, Blue Goldstone gets you there.

Damp Cloth, Dish Soap, Done

Most of these stones need water, a drop of dish soap, and a soft cloth. Afghan White Jade only wants a gentle wipe with a damp cloth, no scrubbing. Salt Rock is the fussy one: its rough rose-pink surface traps lint, fibres, and dust, so wipe it often and keep it out of steamy bathrooms, because salt and standing water don't mix. Start with Obsidian if you want one stone with a real geological backstory, or Salt Rock if you'd rather have something with presence in a bedroom corner.
