Incense Sai Baba Nag Champa
Satya Sai Baba Nag Champa incense is one of the most famous of the world - it is hand rolled onto a bamboo stick and is particularly popular in the US. From Nag Champa to Backflow: How to Pick Your Incense
Most people land here for one of two reasons. Either the room smells of last night, or they want a scent they connect with sitting still for twenty minutes. Same fix for both: one stick, one holder. Everything else on this page, and across the rest of the smartshop, is a variation on that.
Nag Champa First, Then Go Smokier
Nag Champa is the smell most people mean when they say incense: creamy, sweet, sandalwood sitting underneath, faintly powdery once the smoke has settled into the curtains. Four versions live in this category. Sai Baba is the hand-rolled classic, Goloka is a bit sharper and drier, Super Hit leans heavy on the vanilla side, and Natural Nag Champa is the mellowest of them. Want plain sandalwood instead? The Satya incense sticks cover it, agarbatti if that's the word you grew up with. For something resinous and darker, Dragon's Blood and Californian White Sage burn thicker and less sweet, and the 7 Chakra Incense box from Sagrada Madre lets you work through seven scents before you commit to a favourite.
Sticks, Dhoop Cones, Powder or Raw Palo Santo
Sticks are the default: paste rolled onto a thin bamboo core, roughly half an hour of burn each, easy to put out early. Dhoop cones like the Sai Baba Nag Champa Dhoop Cones skip the bamboo entirely, so they're solid paste that burns hotter, faster and much smokier. Watch out for that in a small bedroom, one cone can fog a room in minutes, so open a window before you light it. Incense Powder is loose and needs a charcoal disc plus a shell or dish under it, which is more faff but gives you control over how much you burn. Palo Santo sticks and raw palo santo wood sit somewhere in between: light the tip, blow out the flame, let it smoulder for a citrusy, sappy smoke that's been used in South America for generations.
Holders, Ash and the Backflow Trick
A stick needs something under it or you're scrubbing grey dust off the shelf. The Green Tree holder is the plain wooden boat that catches everything, and the Kung-Fu Turtle, Dragon, Antique Silver, teak and palm wood versions do the same job with more character. Loose powder and palo santo chunks want an Abalone Shell instead. Backflow burners are the showy option: the Blue Waterfall and the Dragon and Bronze Hand designs make smoke pour downwards like liquid. They only do that with hollow-core backflow cones, though, and normal sticks won't work in them. If you only care about the smell, a flat wooden holder does more for less.
What This Range Actually Is
All of it is botanical incense for burning: wood, resins, gums and oils on a stick, in a cone or loose in a jar. None of it is a smoking blend, and nothing here belongs in a pipe or a paper. - Which incense sticks smell the best?
Nag Champa wins the popular vote, and Sai Baba is the version most people picture: sweet, creamy and sandalwood-heavy. If you find it too sugary, Goloka is drier and Natural Nag Champa is softer. For a smokier, more resinous room scent, go for Dragon's Blood or Californian White Sage instead.
- How does a backflow incense holder work?
You need backflow cones, the ones with a hollow channel through the middle. Light the tip, let it catch for a few seconds, then sit it on the hole at the top of the holder so the heavy smoke sinks through the channel and runs down the sculpture. Plain sticks and solid dhoop cones will not do this, and the effect breaks if there's a draught in the room.
- Can this incense be smoked?
No. These are incense sticks, cones, powders and woods made to be burned in a holder for room scent, not smoking blends. If you want something to smoke, look at our other categories instead.
- How long does one incense stick burn for?
A standard bamboo-core stick runs around 30 minutes and scents a normal-sized room for a good while after it goes out. Dhoop cones are shorter, closer to 20 minutes, but they push out far more smoke in that time. Loose powder on a charcoal disc lasts as long as you keep feeding it, so start with a small pinch.
