Sales of marijuana generated €7-10 billion in 2010. The European Commission has pointed out how the economic crisis has affected all markets - and that includes the market for narcotics and particularly marijuana. European Council experts refer, that the anti-drug laws in most states even increase the problem, because their ban of marijuana possession, distribution and cultivation actually pushes up the market price. More and more unemployed (not only young) Europeans sell or even cultivate cannabis to make money for a decent living. The traffickers and growers take a good share of the profits for the risk of being busted, put in jail, robbed and attacked and of course for the equipment and time invested in the stealth operations.
