Why You Should Always Test Your Drugs

Testing your drugs before using them can protect both your life and your wallet. Effectively testing your drugs can help you to determine their purity, and the trustworthiness of their source. We have all been there. The festival you've been looking forward to for weeks, or even months, is finally here. You're prepped, you've got your outfit sorted, and you've picked up some product you're hoping is good. But now you're left wondering: is what you bought actually what you think it is?

Testing your drugs before you consume them is always a good idea, and it's a habit that's become a lot more mainstream in recent years. Street drugs are routinely cut with additives and fillers to stretch a batch and lower production costs. Some of these fillers are relatively harmless. Others carry real health risks, sometimes serious ones. On top of that, testing protects your wallet: nobody wants to spend their hard-earned money o a product that turns out to be weak, fake, or nothing like what was promised.

Checking your drugs is quicker and easier than most people assume. EZ Test kits let you check the consistency or purity of a sample within minutes, with nothing more than the kit itself. Where possible, we'd also always recommend combining a home test with an official drug-checking or harm reduction service in your country, such as the Netherlands' DIMS network, since lab-grade equipment can pick up on things a home test can't. Either way, there's really no excuse not to check before you use.

This is what happens if you don't test your drugs

A few years ago, the Vice crew tested drugs at a popular UK music festival and found that almost every sample contained some kind of impurity. One party-goer had paid £20 a pill for what he was told was MDMA. After taking them, he felt nothing.

They concluded that it was almost definitely half an orange-flavoured Rennie, a heartburn pill that's never made anyone hug a complete stranger before telling them, in excruciating, emotional detail, about their parents' divorce.

Other results were more worrying than that. Dextromethorphan (DXM) turned up in one capsule, a substance linked to heat stroke, a well-documented risk among ravers on ecstasy. Another sample contained traces of para-Methoxyamphetamine (PMA), a chemical responsible for the deaths of three UK party-goers in 2015. Several tests came back showing no MDMA at all, leaving people with no real idea what they had actually taken.

The cocaine samples tested weren't much better. EZ tests found them to be of "medium purity," at around 40% pure cocaine, cut mainly with benzocaine (a dental numbing agent) and levamisole (a livestock deworming medication). In humans, levamisole can produce effects loosely similar to cocaine, but it's also been linked to suppressed white blood cell counts and skin necrosis. A UK minister estimated at the time that up to 80% of the cocaine entering the country was cut with it.

More recently, drug-checking services across Europe have flagged a far more dangerous problem: nitazenes. These are synthetic opioids, some of them many times stronger than heroin, that have been turning up in heroin, counterfeit prescription pills, and even other drug categories entirely. Because they're active in such tiny amounts, a dose that looks completely normal to the eye can be lethal. Public Health Scotland issued a nationwide alert on nitazene contamination as recently as August 2025, and similar warnings have gone out across the UK and mainland Europe. It's a good reminder that the adulterant landscape keeps shifting, and that testing isn't a one-time habit you can retire once you've learned about older risks like PMA or levamisole.

How to test the quality of your drugs

You can quickly and conveniently test your drugs using EZ Test kits. They can tell you a lot about the safety or purity of a sample within minutes, sometimes seconds, and they're small and portable enough to bring with you. Here are the test kits we currently carry at Zamnesia.

EZ Test ecstasy

Buying ecstasy has always carried some risk. Given its long history of being cut with additives and fillers, it's worth testing your stash before you take it, so you can avoid unpleasant or dangerous side effects like nausea, panic attacks, or worse.

Open one of the included test containers, add your sample, and shake gently. Wait a few minutes, then check the colour against the chart provided with the kit.

EZ Test MDMA purity

This kit is built to take the guesswork out of buying MDMA. Some pills are close to pure MDMA; others are cut with cheaper amphetamines, including methamphetamine, a substitution that's become increasingly common. This test tells you just how clean your MDMA really is.

Place exactly 20mg of finely ground product in the vial, shake, and let it sit. You'll usually see a result within 5 to 15 minutes, though we'd recommend waiting 30 to 45 minutes for the most reliable read.

EZ Test ketamine

This kit accurately tests for the presence of ketamine, and can also flag other compounds such as MDMA, methamphetamine, methylphenidate (Ritalin), PMA/PMMA, and 2-AI. As with the other EZ kits, only a small amount of powder is needed. Add it to the vial, shake, and wait.

EZ Test LSD and indoles

This kit checks whether your sample contains LSD or other indoles, including DMT, psilocybin, psilocin, 5-MeO-DMT, 5-MeO-MiPT, and others.

EZ Test heroin purity

Given how often heroin and other opioids are cut, and the current spread of extremely potent synthetic opioids like nitazenes into the opioid supply, this is one of the more important tests in the range. It checks the purity of the heroin in your sample, giving you a clearer picture of what you're actually dealing with before use.

EZ Test cocaine: three kits

Cocaine has a well-earned reputation for being laced with additives, and the more hands a batch passes through, the more likely it is to have been cut. The further you are from the source, the higher the odds. Testing beforehand can tell you a lot about what you're actually holding, and Zamnesia carries three EZ tests built for exactly that.

These strips don't react to the cocaine itself. Instead, they react to common cutting agents such as ephedrine, phenacetin, and levamisole. Add a small amount of your sample to the vial, shake, and check the colour against the included chart. Results are usually visible within seconds.

This cocaine purity test checks the purity level of your cocaine within seconds. It won't tell you exactly what it's cut with, but it will give you a solid idea of how much actual cocaine is in the sample.

Crack cocaine carries the same cutting risks as its main ingredient. This test kit won't identify every possible additive, but it will tell you whether your sample contains cocaine, crack cocaine, MiPT, MDPV, or 5-MeO. It's used the same way as the other cocaine tests, with results available within seconds.

The Dope or Nope range: a newer way to test

Alongside the classic EZ Test line, we now also carry the Dope or Nope range, a newer generation of test kits built around the same idea: know what you have before you use it.

The general drug test uses a simple colour-coded system to help identify a substance at home. The purity drug test determines the purity of cocaine, MDMA, or heroin in seconds, and the drug test is built to help rule out some of the more dangerous substances that can turn up in a sample. All three are worth having alongside, or instead of, the EZ Test kits above.

How do these tests work?

Whether you're using a classic EZ Test or one of the newer Dope or Nope kits, the principle is the same. A specific chemical reagent, matched to the substance being tested for, is held in the vial or test strip. When it meets the target substance, a chemical reaction triggers a colour change. Some kits show a result almost instantly; others need a few minutes to fully develop. Once the colour has changed, compare it against the chart included with your kit to read the result.

Please keep in mind that all test kits are sold without warranty, and none of them replace a full laboratory analysis. If you want a truly thorough breakdown of a sample, an official drug-checking service or laboratory is still your best option.

Know before you use

A few minutes with a test kit won't tell you everything, but it can tell you enough to make a safer choice, and that's reason enough to make it a habit rather than an afterthought. The supply keeps shifting: what was worth watching out for a decade ago, like PMA or heavily cut cocaine, has been joined by newer and more dangerous risks like nitazenes. Testing is how you keep up with that.
