Ayahuasca-based healing takes another step forward, as it becomes legitimised for use through the guidance of a church.

--- UPDATE ---

Since the writing of this article, Ayahuasca Healings have been shown to be dishonest in their claims of legality. The nature of the church has since been exposed as a sham, and their affiliation with the Native American Church to be false, despite their claims. Even for the real branches of the church, the use of ayahuasca is assessed on a case by case basis. As such, it remains illegal for members of Ayahuasca Healings to use ayahuasca in the US. All evidence points to this being simply the work of an opportunist trying to cash in on the sacred rites of a rich heritage.

Several branches of the Native American Church have filed legal proceedings against Ayahuasca Healings. The cultural integration of psychedelic based therapy in the West is a slow process, and by falsely claiming legality, Ayahuasca Healings has done a disservice to the effort.

Ayahuasca is one of the most potent hallucinogenic brews known to man. It has the ability to open the mind and thrust you into the depths of consciousness. Beside its visionary quality, the experience is usually accompanied by the purge - valued highly for expelling unwanted emotional and physical ballast. As you can imagine, anything with such a profound effect must be illegal across most of the planet. Yet it has found a safe haven; a place where it can be used for spiritual practice without the worry of incarceration, discrimination, or reprimand. Where is this wondrous place? The USA.

That’s right! Ayahuasca escaped the depths of the Amazonian rainforest. The Peruvian spiritual organisation Ayahuasca Healings has just been granted church status in the United States, meaning ayahuasca can be used for genuine and sincere spiritual practice. It will allow those who pursue the way of the plants for their healing and spiritual growth to do so as members of the church, under the church’s guidance.

Ayahuasca is a traditional Amazonian hallucinogenic brew made from the vine of Banisteriopsis caapi and Psychotria viridis, as well as various other rainforest plants. The result is a powerful combination of DMT and MAO inhibitors, which render the DMT orally active. The brew induces a most potent visionary state, which is often accompanied by physical purging of rather great intensity. This element sets the Ayahuasca experience apart from other psychedelics, as the purge is considered an integral part of the process.
