DMT is a psychoactive compound known to produce intense auditory and visual hallucinations. When consuming DMT, many people feel as though they have left their body, the world, or have entered another dimension altogether. Let's find out what it's really like to trip on DMT.

Although it is less well-known than other commonly used psychedelics such as magic mushrooms and LSD, DMT (N,N-dimethyltryptamine) is prized for its mind-blowing hallucinogenic effects. It is a chemical substance that occurs naturally inside of plants, and potentially even humans. When it is consumed in isolation, DMT is known to produce brief yet very intense auditory and visual hallucinations.

WHAT IS DMT?

For the most part, DMT is considered to be a rather mysterious and fascinating substance. Some people who consume DMT report profound experiences that completely change their outlook and understanding of the reality around them. Often, these experiences are positive, curious, and introspective, leaving many people walking away with a deep sense of wonder and amazement. Knowing what to expect from a DMT trip can help you better understand and more comfortably navigate this complex and profound experience. Keep reading to find out more about DMT and how it is consumed.

What Is Dmt?

DMT is a crystalline powder extracted from certain plants (Psychotria viridis and Banisteriopsis caapi) native to South America. DMT is believed to act as a non-selective agonist on most, if not all, serotonin receptors, especially 5-HT2A serotonin receptors.

Although very little is known about DMT in humans or animals, it has been hypothesised that the chemical is actually produced in the brain’s pineal gland. A 2013 animal study partially confirmed this hypothesis when it found DMT in the pineal glands of live rats[1]. However, much more research is needed to confirm these findings in humans.

DMT has been used for hundreds, if not thousands, of years, in religious practices and ceremonies. It is a crucial ingredient in the potent ayahuasca brew, an Amazonian concoction that initiates a long, intense trip—far longer than DMT by itself. In fact, in the modern West, DMT is sometimes referred to as "the businessman’s trip" due to its short duration and strong intensity.

WHAT IS A DMT TRIP LIKE?

A DMT trip is typically characterised by visual and auditory hallucinations. Visual hallucinations such as geometric and kaleidoscopic patterns (often described as Aztec, Mayan, or Islamic patterns) are common. Oftentimes, people believe they have "broken through" to entirely new dimensions filled with strange beings. Many people describe a feeling of leaving their body behind and allowing their spirit to float into other worlds. These are often vibrant and deeply emotional experiences that lead many to believe they are in another reality altogether.

Some also describe interactions with mystical or extraterrestrial beings during their DMT experience. Sometimes these beings are described as extraterrestrials, other times they are described as impish or machine-like entities. These beings can appear either friendly or hostile, and typically take on the form of humanoids in one shape or another. Many people report their interactions with these beings to feel just as real as with any human, leading some to believe they may be more than just mere hallucinations.

Additionally, it’s common to experience "ego death", a feeling of detachment from the self. This leads to profound feelings of connectedness, peace, and love that can change the way people think and feel about life and the world long after they have taken DMT.

It has been theorised that the DMT naturally present in our bodies may be associated with surreal moments like near-death experiences. These incredibly intense moments, where time seems to slow down and consciousness feels deeply different than normal, appear to take people out of their normal reality, allowing for moments of deep introspection.

A substance as powerful as DMT should be treated with respect. It is important to consider your experience beforehand and decide what you wish to gain from it. Entering a DMT trip without taking a moment to consider the adventure could possibly turn into a frightful experience, especially if you are prone to anxiety.

What Are The Potential Risks When Consuming Dmt?

WHAT ARE THE POTENTIAL RISKS WHEN CONSUMING DMT?

Compared to other potent hallucinogens like magic mushrooms or acid, DMT is considered to have a relatively mild side effects profile. Among the most common side effects of DMT are increased heart rate, increased blood pressure, agitation, dilated pupils, dizziness, and chest tightness or pain.

It is recommended to always have a trip sitter or companion present when consuming DMT. Since your behaviour can become unpredictable under the influence of DMT, it is simply safer to have somebody sober nearby who can protect you and others from yourself.

DMT is typically smoked or vaped out of a pipe or vaporizer. Traditionally, it has been consumed as a tea, similarly to ayahuasca. It can also be snorted; however, few people choose to consume it via this method as it is more painful and potentially less effective.

When smoked, a moderate dose of DMT is considered to be in the 20–30mg range, depending on personal tolerance and physiology. Anything below 20mg is considered a low dose, and anything above 30mg, a stronger dose. It is always best to start low and go slow with DMT. However, it is not unheard of for experienced users with a high tolerance to consume over 100mg in a single dose.

DMT is not a party drug; like most psychedelics, it should be treated with a great amount of respect and given adequate preparation. As one of the most enigmatic hallucinogenic substances on Earth, DMT continues to leave those who experience it with a profound and lasting sense of awe.
