Now We Know Its Safe To Bike While High
It isn’t just those dropping LSD that have a thing for going on bike rides. Go to Amsterdam, and you will quickly notice a large amount of people whizzing around the streets having just come out of a coffee shop high as a kite. It is an extremely fun thing to do, and the sensation can be phenomenal. According to a new study published in the International Journal of Legal Medicine, it is also safe.
Of course, biking in a city is pretty dangerous in general, so don’t think this is an excuse to throw all sense and safety out of the window. However, generally speaking, it appears that someone who has enjoyed a joint can operate a bike with the same level of awareness as a regular, sober person.
ASSESSING SAFETY: FLYING HIGH AROUND AN OBSTACLE COURSE
In order to assess the effects of cannabis on biking skills, participants were made to ride a bike through an obstacle course while sober, and after having one, two, and three joints. Each joint contained 300 micrograms of THC per kilogram of each of the participant’s body weight, helping to keep each participant at roughly the same level of chill. When smoking their joints, they were instructed to inhale for 4 seconds, hold their breath for 10, then exhale over 15 seconds. While some of you may think that this is not a realistic way of smoking weed, it is standardised, and remember, the lungs absorb 95% of THC within the first 3 seconds, so claiming any particular method works better than another is a load of guff.
The study concluded that there was no significant disturbance in a participant’s coordination while high, meaning they didn’t topple over, or perform any worse than they did sober.
The authors wrote:
“Hardly any driving faults occurred under the influence of cannabis, only a few driving faults were observed even under the influence of very high THC concentrations. […] On average, there is no increase in the number of demerits after the cannabis consumption.”
It is worth noting that operating any kind of vehicle while high is done so at your own risk. At the end of the day the most important thing is to be responsible – enjoy yourself, but don’t endanger others, or yourself, in the process.
CYCLING AND LSD
As mentioned, it is not just cannabis that pairs well with hopping on your bike for a leisurely ride through the countryside. Psychonauts across the globe famously drop acid and take to their bikes every April 19th to commemorate the day Albert Hoffman first synthesised and ingested LSD, before taking a magical bike ride home. For many, the thrill goes beyond one day, with cycling becoming a favourite activity while tripping. It is a subject we will be exploring deeper on April 19th, so keep an eye out!
