Studies show that the endocannabinoid system plays a key role in regulating sleep. But what about CBD? Can taking cannabidiol help you get a good night's rest?

The endocannabinoid system is involved in mediating countless bodily processes, including sleep. If you struggle to get a solid, refreshing night’s rest, there is some research to suggest that CBD could help. In this article, we’ll take a closer look at the relationship between sleep, CBD, and the endocannabinoid system.

The human sleep cycle lasts roughly 90 minutes and repeats multiple times during the night. During this 90-minute cycle, we essentially pass through 4 different stages of sleep.

Stage 1 of the human sleep cycle is known as “light sleep”. Here, the brain starts to produce theta brain waves, muscle activity drops, and our breathing slows. It’s common for people to experience muscle twitches during this first stage of sleep. Stage 2 is a transitory sleep phase, and stage 3 marks the beginning of the “deep sleep phase”, during which we experience slow, rhythmic breathing and very little muscle activity. The final stage of the sleep cycle is REM sleep. This is when brain activity peaks, our bodies enter a deep paralysis, and we start dreaming.

In a normal night, people will pass through this cycle 4 or 5 times. As the night progresses, people tend to spend less time in the earlier stages of the cycle and more time in the REM stage.

The Importance Of A Good Night’s Sleep

Sleep is crucial for both our physical and mental well-being. Unfortunately, millions of people suffer from sleep issues. In fact, some studies suggest that up to 30% of the adult population[1] has trouble getting to or staying asleep.

The causes of sleep disorders like insomnia vary. For many people, the root cause of sleep issues are poor sleep habits like an irregular sleep schedule or using computers, mobile phones, or tablets just before bed. Stress and anxiety are also common causes of sleep issues, and a wide variety of medical conditions (both physical and mental) can interfere with a person’s ability to get a solid night’s rest.

The endocannabinoid system is involved in regulating countless physiological processes. Besides helping regulate our response to stress, appetite, and pain, research suggests that the ECS also plays an active role in mediating sleep.

In 2016, for example, PLOS One published a review of various studies that measured sleep in rats after different manipulations of the endocannabinoid system. Findings of the review[2] included:

  • Increasing endocannabinoid tone produced an increase in non-rapid eye movement sleep.
  • Directly activating CB1 receptors affected non-REM sleep time and stability.
  • Blocking CB1 receptors fragmented non-REM sleep.
  • The effect of endocannabinoid activity on sleep varies depending on time of day.

How To Use Cannabis For Improving Your Sleep

Other studies have further displayed a relationship between the endocannabinoid system and the human sleep cycle. Unfortunately, how the cannabinoids in cannabis affect our ability to fall and stay asleep isn’t completely clear. Studies show, for example, that THC, the main intoxicant in cannabis, might help induce sleep[3], but can also fragment and disrupt the sleep cycle. In that sense, THC is kind of similar to alcohol.

Sleep studies also implicate the role of endocannabinoids anandamide and 2-AG. In a 2011 review[4] of literature looking at the endocannabinoid system and its role in sleep, researchers found endocannabinoids to help induce sleep.

Does CBD Improve Sleep?

So, research shows that the endocannabinoid system definitely plays an important role in sleep. But what about CBD? Cannabidiol is praised for having all kinds of different health benefits, and countless sources suggest CBD as a natural, non-intoxicating sleep aid. In fact, 10% of CBD users[5] report using cannabidiol to treat insomnia and sleep issues. But are these claims valid?

Unfortunately, most of the research into cannabis and its effect on sleep looks at multiple cannabinoids at once. This means we still know very little about how CBD affects the human sleep cycle.

What we do know, however, is that CBD can be very effective at relieving anxiety and stress. And this may be how it can help promote sleep. In 2019, The Permanente Journal published a large clinical trial[6] testing the effects of CBD on anxiety and sleep. The study included a total of 72 patients suffering from anxiety and sleep issues. All the patients were given CBD along with their regular treatments.

Within the first 30 days of treatment, anxiety levels dropped in roughly 80% of the patients. The sleep scores of the test group also improved by 70%.

Unfortunately, this study does very little to specify whether CBD is effective against anxiety or sleep disorders, or how exactly it delivers any benefits. Nonetheless, it does suggest that CBD could be beneficial for people with sleep issues. Combined with the fact that there’s a large body of anecdotal evidence suggesting CBD can help improve sleep, it is definitely worth investigating further.
