Seed Bank Review: Barney‘s Farm

Barney’s farm is one of the Netherlands most popular seed banks, and a big players in the cannabis seed market. Though they started with humble origins, Barney’s farm has produced award winning strains.

The origin of Barney’s Farm can be traced back to the early 80’s where a small group of breeders where holed up in the rocky heights of the Himalayas, experimenting with, breeding and cross breeding various strains of marijuana. Derry, one of the breeders, and founder and owner of Barney’s seeds, collected these strains from his previous travels across Asia and the Middle East, including places such as Afghanistan, Pakistan, India, Thailand, Vietnam, Nepal and Tibet. With these samples in hand, the group spent 3 years up in the Himalayas, choosing their most THC laden creations and refining them into some of the strains that make Barney’s Farm so popular today.

With complete strains in hand, Derry returned to Amsterdam where he became the owner of Barney’s Farm coffee shop. The superior genetics he and his team had bred in the Himalayas quickly boosted Barney’s Farm coffee shop above the rest, and set in motion an unstoppable force that still holds a great deal of momentum to this day.

Barney’s Farm is among the top seed banks in the world, and although they have come far from their more humble origins, they are still producing some very high quality products. It is one of the fears when seed banks grow big, that they outgrow their original ideals and begin to focus more on profit over quality as they become more commercial. Fortunately this does not seem to be the case here, but that is for you to decide.

Prime examples of their work

Critical Kush

Probably one of their most popular strains, Critical Kush is an ultimate powerhouse pure indica that can produce 750 grams/m2 of top shelf weed. All the while packing a 25% THC punch – quite a force to be reckoned with. Critical Kush has won 1st place in the Cannabis Cup.

Liberty Haze

For those looking for a bit more Haze, Barney’s Farm have produced the beast known as Liberty Haze, a strain that can send your mind flying well out of your skull with just one toke. Lab tests have shown that Liberty Haze can contain up to 25% THC. Liberty Haze was named best overall strain at the 2011 High Times Cannabis Cup.

Pineapple Chunk

Pineapple Chunk is another indica favorite from the Barney’s Farm catalogue, and has built a reputation for its strong exotic taste. Much like most of Barney’s popular strains, Pineapple Chunk is extremely powerful, packing a THC content of around 25%. It was named best Indica at the 2009 High Times Cannabis Cup.
