Echinopsis macrogona: Sacred Cactus With Psychedelic Properties

Echinopsis macrogona AKA Trichocereus macrogonus belongs to the group of sacred cacti of Middle- and South America. Some compare this variety to the Peruvian Torch cactus because it is similar in appearance and has the same powerful psychedelic properties. Together with the Peruvian torch and other sacred cacti, shamans in Middle- and South America use Echinopsis macrogona for religious and spiritual rituals.

The origin of Echinopsis macrogona is not exactly known. Some are saying that this variety had been discovered in Bolivia while others are putting its origins to Argentina or Brazil. The cactus has a resemblance to the more-widely known Peruvian torch cactus and like the Peruvian torch can reach a height of several meters in the wild. It can reach a diameter of up to 10 cm with some individual cacti even more. The cactus has a blueish-green colour with grey-coloured areoles and yellow-brown spines.

Those who have already grown a Peruvian torch or a San Pedro should not find it difficult at all to cultivate the Echinopsis macrogona. It grows pretty much in the same way with the same (minimal) requirements. Like most sacred cacti, this is a very hardy and resilient plant that will grow fine with very little maintenance required. For optimal growing, a well-draining soil or special cactus potting mix from the gardening store will be optimal. The cactus requires very little water and then only in the hot months in the summer. Give it water once per week and make sure that the soil can dry out between waterings.

With the cactus seeds available at Zamnesia you can now grow Echinopsis macrogona at home!

    Fast growing!
It is now 10 days after planting in sterilized soil (50% cacti commercial soil, and 50% perlite) and they are all getting their head off :) I hope the sterilization will save them from mold. I forgot to wash them, if it happens, it will be because of that I guess. But right now, aller gut!

    Positive results
Not as successful as J.F. but an almost 50% germination rate, that's not bad.

    Crazy good seeds
So I started mine on the 23rd of May. Just wanted to try growin something new. All of a sudden these things popped up everywhere. Where I grow a lot of cactus both mescaline and non mescaline I write the Latin names on the tub. Today I was like WFT are these seeds and why are there so many sproutlings! I even had to check my previous orders because I swear I’d only only bought 20. Turns out I’d bought 40 and At there’s at least 33 of the little buggers. When I upped the temp of the soil, everything Zamnesia went flipping mental. Even some loon seeds I thought were done germinating started sprouting even more. Bloody good seeds. I recon Zamnesia should send me some more Aztec seeds because I love a cactus challenge

    sehr schnelle Lieferung
Die Samen sind gut angekommen. Diese Varietät findet man nicht überall! Mit der Aussaat warte ich bis im Frühling-Da die Kakteen selbst immer top Qualität waren, denke ich dass es die Samen ebenfalls gut sind. Danke Zamnesia
