Sweet Basil helps attract good insects and tastes delicious

SWEET BASIL

Sweet Basil (Ocimum basilicum) is rightly called the prince of plants. It is a herbaceous annual that has large, soft, lush, fragrant foliage that is edible. A valuable plant in your garden it is used extensively in Italian, Thai, Malaysian and Indonesian cooking. Basil is frost tender so it grows well during the warmer months and is partial to a pot indoors on a sun facing windowsill. Growing prolifically in full sun the flower spikes should be regularly plucked out to encourage a bushy and healthy plant.

As a companion plant for cannabis Basil acts as a deterrent to aphids, asparagus beetles, mosquitoes, tomato hornworms and whitefly. As well as deterring nasties, fragrant basil will attract butterflies and other beneficial insects to your patch. It likes to be around chamomile, but will not like being planted with common rue or sage. Tomato growers swear that planting basil improves the flavour of their tomatoes. It would be interesting to find out if it can play with terpene and flavour profiles in cannabis.

As spring arrives sprinkle your basil seeds lightly in a pot full of seedling mix and gently cover with less than a centimetre of the same soil mix. Once they are well developed and starting to tangle, transplant to your desired location.
