Alzheimer’s Disease destroys lives, of both the sufferer and those close to them. Understandably, science is keen to find a solution, and they are looking to cannabis.

Up until very recently, pre-clinical studies have theorised that cannabis could be an effective way of treating the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease. However, there has been very little research taking it further, until now. According to investigators, a liquid cannabis extract appeared to significantly reduce many of the dreaded symptoms of this disease.

Publishing in The Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease, this observational trial followed ten Alzheimer suffers over a prolonged period of time. Each participant was administered a THC-rich liquid along with their normal medicine. It was found that when given the cannabis-derived liquid, the severity score for aggression, irritability, delusion and apathy decreased. It strongly suggests cannabis could help patients deal with dementia related to the condition.

The researchers concluded, “Adding medical cannabis oil to Alzheimer’s disease patients pharmacotherapy is safe and a promising treatment option.”

What does this all mean? Well, it offers a potential and much-needed way to fight this Alzheimer’s. It is a disease humans have been trying to combat for decades, with little to no success. Not only does cannabis potentially offer a way for people to significantly improve quality of life, but also gives us an insight into the underlying factors that may be causing Alzheimer’s.

Of course, a sample of ten patients is not exactly representative. Much more research and trialling is required, but things are looking good. These findings are also backed up by another study, which found that dronabinol, a synthetic THC pill, reduced agitation and improved weight gain in Alzheimer sufferers. It all suggests, once again, that cannabis has a lot to offer; we just need to be willing to delve a little deeper.
