Stoner Music: Songs To Listen To While High

5 min

Listening to music whilst high can take your experience to a whole new level, so check out our list of top stoner songs and albums.

Marijuana and music go hand in hand. There is nothing better than simply kicking back, rolling a joint, and putting on some of your favourite music - getting lost in its rhythms and patterns. It is no coincidence that music sounds so much better when you are stoned. Cannabis is a mild form of psychedelic, and can enhance the senses, making you see patterns and complex depths that where never apparent before; and with music being such a complicated mix of components, it is no wonder it is possible to find a whole new appreciation for it.

With this in mind, we thought it would be a good idea to put together a few songs and albums that are particularly good to listen to whilst high. Some of these are directly about marijuana, some are simply joy to listen to, and others are a bit of both.

Here we present the tunes that keep the Zamnesia crew entertained. The following Spotify playlist is created by carefully selecting all the relevant tunes that set the background for our operations. These songs don’t follow any specific order; they’re all relevant! Let’s begin the count. Press "Play" in the Spotify audio player for the soundtrack to your next smoke sesh.

If you want to be taken on a musical journey during a long session, then these albums, from start to finish, are where you want to be. Never has an album’s flow and story been ever more apparent than when you are high.

1. Kaya – Bob Marley

Bob Marley was the king of reggae, with themes of peace, love, weed, and freedom being central to his work. The use of cannabis was integral to his beliefs, and this is no more apparent than in his 1978 album, Kaya. Kaya is the Jamaican slang for marijuana, and this album not only sounds great, but has persistent marijuana related themes throughout.

2. The Dark Side Of The Moon – Pink Floyd

This is an absolute rock classic, and must have for any drug/music enthusiast. The complex melodies, depth, wailing guitars, and pure, unbridled emotion will take you on a chilled out journey like never before. With classics like Time, Money, and The Great Gig In The Sky, you can’t miss it. It is nothing short of a musical orgasm.

3. L.A. Woman – The Doors

The ambient, sexy, rock and roll sound of The Doors’ L.A. Woman was made for puffing on some weed, laying back on your bed, and getting lost in the music. If you need an example from this album, check out ‘Riders on the Storm’. Its ominous atmosphere, lethal organ solo, smooth jazz undertones, and rainstorm effects are sure to put you in the right place.

4. Mezzanine – Massive Attack

For those of you that like a bit of Trip-hop, let us point you in the direction of Mezzanine by Massive Attack. This hauntingly beautiful album will have you completely enthralled, and is a choice album to listen to with your significant other – you will find yourself getting lost in the depth of their soul – great for love making!

5. Greatest Hits From The Bong – Cypress Hill

Whilst it may not tell a story in the same way the above albums do, this greatest hits album is a must have for any stoner rap/rap-core enthusiast. They are one of the godfather of cannabis related rap, and their music is ideal for any badman smoking session.

Maybe you don’t have the time to kick back for an albums worth of music or maybe you are compiling a playlist of your own – to sculpt your own melodic experience. No matter your reasoning, we have a few select songs for you right here.

1.  Bitches N Marijuana - Chris Brown & Tyga

Featuring rapper Schoolboy Q, this R&B anthem is all about Chris Brown and Tyga's two favourite things: girls and marijuana. Adding 'money' to that list would have made for the trifecta of West coast hip-hop, but let's not be greedy. Listening to this tune transports us to sunny LA, cruising along Venice beach with the top down and the back seat full of bikini-clad ganja babes. Now, that is a daydream we can smoke to.

2. Mary Jane – Rick James

“I’m Rick James, Bitch!” This smooth, soulful ladies’ man hit the nail right on the head with this song. It would do well in any stoners’ music library.

3. Regulate - Warren G & Nate Dogg

It’s time for some old-school G-funk. Warren G describes street life on the East Side during the ‘90s. This tune features Nate Dogg who died in 2011, R.I.P. Regulate is about regulating the street life to keep the status-quo in tact. This G-tune deserves a spot on any dope playlist.

4. Welcome To Jamrock - Damian Marley

The youngest son of the legend Bob Marley, Damian Marley has become an icon in his own right. Jamrock is all about the real life in Jamaica. Thug life, Rastafari life, political violence, and cops wreaking havoc. One does not simply go through life without listening to this tune.

5. Comfortably Numb – Pink Floyd

This slow, relaxing song is sure to space you out with its deep and rhythmic tunes. Just be sure not to go too deep!

6. Kush - Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg & Akon

Hold up, wait a minute, let me put some Kush up in it. We approve of this message. Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, and Akon smoke fat blunts comprised of that indica Kush variety. This G-trio delivers the greatest Kush available; in fact, it’s so high-quality, listening to this tune gets the listener high as f***.

7. It Was A Good Day - Ice Cube

Ice Cube, originating from N.W.A., expresses what it’s like to have a good day. This chill tune shows the light side of the dark G-life. At Zamnesia, we drop this tune every now and then to get inspired and have a good day ourselves. Have a listen.

8. Purple Haze - Jimi Hendrix

Purple Haze by Jimi Hendrix is a masterpiece, simple as that. Hendrix himself was a sorcerer on the guitar, making ANY of his music worth listening to whilst high - no stoner music list would be complete without him, so check him out.

9. 7th Element - Vitas

It’s impossible not to smile while listening to Vitas. This Russian singer is all about weird sounds and funky beats. This post-Disco “melody festival-esque” tune provides us with all the happiness we need. Some people call Vitas a weirdo - we call him a genius who wears an outlandish dress, transporting us to a funky future.

10. Marijuana – Kid Cudi

This soulful song has influenced many, and certainly makes you feel like a badass boss.

11. Changes - Tupac

Tupac delivered this song to change the world for the better. The beat, mixed with a hopeful piano line, accompany Tupac’s message. Changes topped the charts back in the ‘90s. Straight from the hood, Tupac became a legend, spreading much Thug Life vibes for the world. That’s just the way it is.

12. Rainy Day Women #12 & 35 – Bob Dylan

Pretty self-explanatory really, this folk legend has everything you could want in a smooth stoner song.

13. Three Little Birds - Bob Marley

Don’t worry about a thing, because every little thing is gonna be alright. Bob Marley has taken over the world with his positive vibes, bringing Reggae music to the attention of the world. Three little birds by Zamnesia’s doorstep bring the message of peace and love.

14. Because I Got High - Afroman

Afroman got so high he forgot to fulfill his daily tasks. This legendary tune, beloved by nearly every stoner on the face of the earth, explains what it means to be a true ganja enthusiast. Turn up this tune on Spotify, unless you get high and forget.

15. Man’s Not Hot - Big Shaq

Skrrrrrrrrrrrrrrra, pop pop kah kah kah. A real OG just entered the scene with mad lyrics and a mad jacket. He’ll never take it off, man’s not hot. Big Shaq, a true mathematician, explains his reality of life through thug rap. Zamnesia can’t get enough of Big Shaq.

There you go! These are but a few gems, and some of our favourites, out of the many hundreds of worthy songs out there. Hopefully some of these albums and songs will give you inspiration, and open up new avenues of stoner related music for you to enjoy no matter what you are doing.
