What Is Kratom Tea Good For?

Kratom is an interesting plant species, not least of all because of the various strains available. In general, many users report that the herb can help to relieve tension, address low mood, and offer support when feeling fatigued.

The most important thing to watch out for among kratom strains is their strength. Some species have a slightly different alkaloid structure, and are much stronger as a result. Provided you know exactly which strain you're preparing, there's no reason kratom tea can't deliver an uplifting boost.

  • Don't worry about boiling water ruining your kratom tea. Unlike many other plant-based alkaloids, the alkaloids within kratom—namely, mitragynine—are stable at high temperatures.

  • Lemon juice is a fantastic addition that not only enhances the flavour of kratom tea, but helps protect the alkaloids within.

  • If the flavour is too strong, add a sweetener or ice cubes to make the taste more enjoyable.

  • Experiment with kratom powder and crushed kratom leaves. Both have slightly different tastes.

  • Not a fan of hot drinks? Don't worry! Leave your kratom tea to cool before adding ice and a slice of lemon for a refreshing kratom iced tea.

Dosing Kratom

The amount of kratom you use will largely depend on the required effect. As kratom can affect everyone differently, you will have to work out the best dose for you over time. However, the following acts as a great starting point:

  • 1-2 grams: A very mild effect
  • 2-4 grams: A reasonable effect
  • 4-6 grams: A normal dose for the average user
  • 6-9 grams: A strong effect
  • 9+ grams: A very strong effect

Recipe For Making Kratom Tea

RecipeRecipe For Making Kratom Tea

Making a kratom tea is actually quite simple. To do it, you will need the following:

  • A small saucepan with pouring spout
  • A strainer, or coffee filter paper
  • Water
  • Kratom powder
  • 1 Lemon
  • Optional: honey, sugar, cinnamon, or anything else you want to flavour it with.

Instructions

  1. Pour 1½ cups of water into a saucepan and squeeze in the juice of your lemon.

  2. Bring the water to a simmer, and then add in your pre-defined measure of kratom powder.

  3. Stir it all up and allow the water to continue to simmer for a further 15 minutes.

  4. Take your saucepan off its heat source.

  5. Place your strainer over your mug, and slowly pour through the kratom tea. This should collect any residual powder to ensure your tea is clear and sediment free.

  6. Add anything else into the tea that you want to adjust the flavour with.

  7. Enjoy!

Note: you can keep the powder collected in the strainer for reuse. It will create a weaker, but still useable tea. If not, you can throw it away.

How To Make Kratom Tea Taste Better

How To Make Kratom Tea Taste Better

We've touched on this already, but without any sweeteners or extra ingredients, kratom is quite bitter, with a natural, earthy flavour. If you can stomach the authentic flavour, then great—bottoms up! If not, don't worry; there are several ways to improve the taste.

Natural sweeteners such as honey are ideal, but you can also try ginger, fruit syrups, artificial sweeteners, or lemon juice. You can even opt for a kratom/fruit tea hybrid, mixing the two for the best of both worlds. You'll still gain the kratom-inspired boost, but your drink will taste far more appealing.

Best of all, none of the sweetening ingredients listed above will diminish the effect.

How To Store Kratom Tea

How To Store Kratom Tea

Once you've made a batch of kratom tea, there's no reason to drink it all in one go. Whether you're saving it for a fresh cup later in the day or week, it’s perfectly fine to store your concoction, provided you follow these simple rules:

  • Avoid direct sunlight
  • Store in an airtight container
  • Keep the tea somewhere with a stable temperature
  • Prevent contact with strong-smelling objects

Can You Refrigerate Kratom Tea?

One of the best ways to enjoy kratom tea is cold! Users even report a milder taste when enjoyed cold, so that's a benefit worth considering. If you are chilling your kratom tea, the fridge is ideal. To maintain the integrity of the alkaloids within, store kratom tea in an opaque, airtight container.

When Does Kratom Tea Expire?

Follow the tips outlined above, and your kratom tea should keep for up to a week in the fridge, or indefinitely if you freeze it. Kratom powder and leaves maintain their integrity for several weeks, provided you keep them in a cool, dark, and dry cupboard until needed.

Kratom Tea Vs Kava

Kratom Tea vs Kava

Kratom and kava are frequently confused, so it's worth clarifying their similarities and differences. Starting with their similarities, both are typically enjoyed as a cold brew or tea, and induce similar effects. At low doses, kava and kratom induce uplifting sensations, while more potent concoctions start to soothe mind and body.

However, take a look at both plants side by side under a microscope, and the differences are clear to see. The plants' chemical structures differ significantly, with the main alkaloids in kratom being mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine, and the main ones in kava being kavalactones.

The chemical difference causes a very different biological interaction when consumed, and also contributes to the legal nature of the two plants. Kratom has a slightly nebulous relationship with law enforcement, while there is a general acceptance of kava in most parts of the world.

There you go! If you enjoy the effects of kratom, infusing it into a tea is a great way to dose yourself up. It’s an incredibly easy yet flexible way to ensure you get all the benefits of kratom, mixed with a great taste and aroma.
