All kits come with a substrate (think of it like soil for a plant) that is already fully colonised with mycelium. Mycelium is the subterranean part of a fungal colony (mould, essentially) from which mushrooms then grow in order to reproduce.

When growing psilocybin mushrooms at home, getting the mycelium to successfully colonise a substrate is the very difficult part, and the process can take months. With mushroom grow kits, all the difficult parts are done for you; you basically need to open them, water them, and let them grow!

The heat mat is used to keep the grow kit at the optimal temperature—23°C. It is at this temperature that Psilocybe cubensis grows most happily. A heat guard isn’t always necessary, but it can help to stop the bottom of the grow kit from getting too hot.

The other pieces of equipment, besides the misting bottle, are all about keeping the grow kit clean. Although fully colonised grow kits are pretty robust, they can still succumb to contamination from very aggressive moulds and bacteria. Therefore, keeping them as clean as possible will help to guarantee a successful harvest.

The misting bottle is used alongside a humidity tent (aka a grow bag), which comes with the grow kit. Once or twice a day, the inside of the tent should be lightly misted. This helps to maintain a very high humidity level, which encourages cubensis growth.

How to choose the right magic mushroom grow kit

Panaeolus cyanescens, or Copelandia Hawaiian, is considered to be the strongest magic mushroom in the world. Unlike the others on this list, it is not part of the cubensis species. As such, these mushrooms grow quite differently, and on a different substrate.
