However, if a large amount of THC syrup is ingested orally (swallowed), the THC must first pass through the stomach and liver before crossing the blood–brain barrier. During this process, the majority of THC is converted into 11-hydroxy-THC, which is substantially more potent. This process ultimately results in effects that take 30–90 minutes to come on, and that last significantly longer than those of sublingually administered THC.

How to make THC syrup

Ingredients

  • 1g finely ground cannabis flower: choose a strain that fits your desired potency and flavour profile
  • 750ml water: acts as the solvent
  • 750g granulated sugar: to sweeten and preserve your syrup
  • 2 tbsp vegetable glycerine: helps to thicken the syrup and can enhance the bioavailability of THC

Equipment

  • Pot or saucepan
  • Strainer or cheesecloth
  • Grinder
  • Storage bottle or jar
  • Baking paper
  • Baking tray

Optional extras

To enhance your THC syrup, consider adding:

  • Lemon zest or juice

Directions

  1. Preheat your oven to 110°C. Then, grind your cannabis until it is coarse—not too fine. Spread your ground cannabis on a baking sheet lined with parchment, and bake for 40 minutes to activate (decarboxylate) the THC. If you skip this stage, your THC syrup won’t get you high!
  2. Combine the water and sugar in a saucepan and heat at a medium temperature until the sugar dissolves completely.
  3. Add the decarboxylated cannabis to the saucepan and simmer on low heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  4. Mix in the vegetable glycerine and continue to simmer for another 5–7 minutes.
  5. Use a cheesecloth or fine strainer to remove all plant material, as the THC will now have been extracted. You can dispose of it.
  6. Pour the filtered syrup into a clean bottle or jar. Store in the refrigerator for up to 1 month.
