Muira puama Tincture: The “potency wood” from the Amazon rainforest

Muira puama, also known as “potency wood” is a traditional rainforest medicine originating from the Amazon region of South America. It has been used for centuries as a traditional herbal remedy by the indigenous people of Brazil who live along the Rio Negro River. Historically, all parts of the plant have been used for medicinal purposes, but it is the bark, roots and stem that are valued the most.

After scientific studies seem to have confirmed the findings of indigenous knowledge, Muira Puama has experienced a steady increase in popularity as a natural aphrodisiac. A study performed by Dr. Jacques Waynberg found that 62% of men suffering from lack of libido and impotence found a „dynamic“ increase of their erectile function within just two weeks of Muira Puama use.

The reported effects of Muira puama are many and varied. Traditionally, Muira puama is used bolster libido, improve sexual function, increase sexual pleasure, increase energy, treat neuromuscular problems, relieve depression and calm nerves. It is also reported to enhance memory, relieve pain, reduce likelihood of fatigue, prevent ulcers and lower blood pressure.

Clinical studies have concluded that Muira Puama indeed has the potential to revive the libido, aid treatment of erectile dysfunction, and affect the central nervous system positively.

Botanical Info
Muira puama, in latin Ptychopetalum, grows as a small tree in the Amazon rainforest. It belongs to the Olacaceea family of flowering plants, (not to be confused with the olive family), and grows to about 5m in height. It produces short leaves that are light green on the top and dark brown on the underside. Muira puama grows small white flowers that have been described as resembling the scent of jasmine.

Research into the chemical composition of Muira puama has found that its active compounds are likely made up of novel-alkaloids, long-chain fatty acids, sesquiterphenes and monoterpenes. Research has also found that Muira puama contains a new alkaloid, which was named muirapuamine.

Although clinical research into the effects of Muira puama have suggested that it does indeed have energising and sexually stimulating effects, it is not known why. Although the chemical composition has been assessed, precisely what causes its effects is still debated.

There are no known health issues with the use of Muira puama. However, caution is advised for those with pre-existing conditions, or who are pregnant or breast-feeding. If in doubt, consult a doctor.
