Herbal Powershots Opium Lettuce - Lactuca virosa Tincture
Lactuca virosa was used in the 19th century by physicians as a substitute when opium could not be obtained. It is related to common lettuce (Lactuca sativa) and is often called Opium Lettuce, Wild Lettuce, Bitter lettuce, Poisonous Lettuce, Tall Lettuce or Great Lettuce. Its leaves and the dried latex (Lactucarium) were used as a sedative until 100 years ago.
Today extracts, tinctures and dried plant material are ingested for the mild psychotropic (specifically sedative and mild hallucinogenic) effects - users often describe the experience as being similar to that of opium, but much milder.
