How To Twax A Joint Or Bowl

3 min

Less embarrassing than twerking, far more painless than waxing, and significantly more uplifting than doing taxes. Twaxing is actually the growing movement of adding a cannabis concentrate to a joint, blunt, or bowl packed with marijuana flower. With the ability to supercharge an ordinary joint, here is everything you need to know about twaxing.

WHAT IS TWAXING?

Coined by a user on Massroots, twaxing involves using wax, oil, hash, kief, or any other type of cannabis concentrate to provide higher potency to a joint or blunt. The concentrates can be applied to the inside of the joint, among the cannabis flower, or to the outside and across the tip. You gain a potent boost to your high and your joint burns slower because of the concentrate’s thicker consistency. Concentrates will of course still melt, but at a much slower rate than the flower will burn.

Cannabis concentrates have gained significant popularity because they can offer concentrations of THC in excess of 70%. That far outshines cannabis flower. By comparison, many strains can only achieve 5–25% THC. Moreover, because you only need a small amount to get incredibly high, a joint is the perfect candidate to which concentrates can be added. One well-twaxed joint will have you riding intense waves of euphoria.

WHAT TOOLS WILL YOU NEED?

Tools

Cannabis concentrates, in most cases, are incredibly sticky. As such, when applying shatter or wax to the joint, you will need to prevent it from sticking to everything else while doing so. Having the following to hand will make life significantly more comfortable:

  • Dabbing tool, for moving your concentrate from point A to B

  • All the necessary components to make a joint: paper, filter, weed, etc.

  • BHO mat to prevent wax from sticking to your worktop

  • A lighter; in case the wax needs to be heated so it is malleable

  • Isopropyl alcohol to clean off any wax residue afterwards

HOW TO TWAX A JOINT OR BLUNT

JOINT — INSIDE

Joint Inside

Simple Single Hit

Applying wax or kief to the inside of a joint is considered the best place to start for twaxing initiates.

1. Lay the rolling paper out flat with your cannabis flower spread evenly down the middle.

2. Using your chosen concentrate (we will assume it is wax), transfer the wax from its container and place some “crumbs” along the length of the joint. The wax will sit on top of the flower, becoming surrounded when the joint is rolled.

3. It is essential to make sure the wax sits in the middle and doesn't come into contact with the paper when rolled. Otherwise, your joint will burn unevenly.

Double Hit

You can also substitute wax for kief using the same principle. However, for a double hit, before rolling the joint, add some kief to the slightly heated wax. The joint will then have cannabis flower, a thin layer of wax, and a layer of kief on top of that. Sublime.

JOINT—OUTSIDE

Joint Outside

An essential tool for applying concentrates to the outside of a joint is a steady hand. Make sure you prepare your masterpiece before getting high, or you may end up covered in sticky and hard-to-remove goo, wasting valuable cannabis concentrate.

Spiral

Spiralling shatter around a joint is a fan-favourite. Shatter is preferred because it can be sticky while still retaining its shape. However, we will also cover a slightly simpler alternative for twaxing the outside of your joint (see step 4).

1. Start by heating your shatter so that it is malleable. Rubbing the concentrate between your fingertips should be sufficient. Depending on the stability of your shatter, you may need to use a lighter.

2. Take one end of the shatter and begin spiralling it around the outside of your joint. The easiest method is to hold the shatter at the top and rotate the joint with your other hand. Work all the way to the bottom, pulling the shatter so it spirals around the joint.

Cobweb

If spiralling the shatter around the outside proves too tricky, try this instead. Spread the heated shatter across the tip of your joint like a cobweb. You will feel the hit as soon as you light up.

Double Hit

The second, more straightforward method, involves using a lighter to heat the shatter first. When the concentrate is slightly runny, roll the entire top half of the joint in the shatter. Again, as a double hit, you can also add kief so that it sticks to the hot shatter.

No matter how you choose to twax your joint, adding concentrates to cannabis flower makes for an incredibly potent high. It has also given way to some amazingly creative joints. Experiment with twaxing both the inside and outside of your joint to see what you can create.

HOW TO TWAX A BOWL

How to Twax

The principle is not too dissimilar to twaxing a joint. Splitting the process into two methods, you have concentrates on top of a packed bowl, or wrapped around large buds before entering the bowl. Again, the former is considered the beginner option, while the latter will require some precision.

Top Of The Bowl

For option A, concentrate on top of a packed bowl, simply do as it says. Wax is the preferred concentrate as it can be broken into small lumps and distributed evenly.

Around The Flowers

This is very similar to wrapping shatter around a joint. Instead this time, you want to wrap the shatter around a bud. Once sufficiently wrapped, they can be placed in the bowl and smoked as usual. Given the precision and intricacy needed for wrapping shatter around buds, this method is considered the “expert mode” of twaxing.

TWAXING VERSUS DABBING

Twaxing versus Dabbing

Which is better, and what do people prefer? The honest answer is neither method is superior. Instead, each one provides unique attributes. Dabbing uses much higher temperatures and lacks any plant material, so the vapour is usually lighter and “cleaner” than the smoke from twaxing.

Twaxing, on the other hand, brings together cannabis concentrates, rolling papers, and bud, so more components are inhaled when smoked. Expect a much thicker smoke and a typically hazier experience. Concentrates can also drip when applied around a joint, so be careful as hot shatter burns. Regardless of whether you prefer twaxing or dabbing, both are guaranteed to get you very, very high!
